UM, RACHEL SAID SHE WAS RUNNING A LITTLE LATE AND SO I THINK WE'RE SWAPPING PLACES, SO, OKAY.

SO WE'LL GO TO THE ED REPORT AND THEN IT LOOKS LIKE SHE'S HERE.

SO, UM, CAN COMMUNITY COUNCIL JUST LIKE, UM, KEN BOARD, WE DID NOT MEET IN JULY FOR RECOGNITION OF SUMMER AND ALL OF THAT GOOD STUFF.

UM, I AM VERY EXCITED TO KIND OF TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PROGRESS THAT WE MADE IN OUR JUNE MEETING.

WE HAVE OUR TWO WORK GROUPS, JUST KIND OF, AS A QUICK REMINDER, WE HAVE OUR DATA WORK GROUP THAT'S REALLY WORKING ON FOCUSING ON DATA, AVAILABLE DATA SOURCES FOR MENTAL HEALTH DATA POINTS OF MEASURING KIND OF MENTAL HEALTH OVERALL IN OUR COMMUNITY.

AND THEN WE ORIGINALLY HAD THIS PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN THAT WAS REALLY GOOD TO WORK IN CONCERT WITH THE LANGUAGE ACCESS TEAM ON, UM, REALLY INCREASING OVERALL AWARENESS OF MENTAL HEALTH AND THE, THE WORK WITH THE ST DAVID'S FOUNDATION.

WE HAVE REALIZED THAT THAT GRANT NEEDS TO MOVE A LITTLE BIT FASTER THAN CAN COMMUNITY COUNCIL HAS THE ABILITY TO MANAGE.

AND SO WHAT THAT GROUP HAS NOW SHIFTED IS TO REALLY LOOKING AT BEST PRACTICES FOR SUPPORTING PURE PEER BASED, UM, SUPPORT SPECIALISTS INSIDE OF THE COMMUNITY.

SO WE NOW HAVE THESE TWO WORK GROUPS THAT ARE WORKING IN CONCERT WITH ONE ANOTHER ON THE TOPIC OF MENTAL HEALTH, ONE ON DATA SYSTEMS, DATA, SHARING, DATA MANAGEMENT, DATA POINTS, AND THEN THE OTHER ON BEST PRACTICES FOR PEER SUPPORT, WHICH HAS REALLY HIGH EFFICACY IN THE RESEARCH.

AND SO WHAT WE DID IN OUR JUNE MEETING IS WE CREATED AN ENTIRE SCHEDULE PANELISTS AND EXPERTS THAT WHO ARE DOING THIS WORK, UM, IN THE COMMUNITY.

WE'RE ACTUALLY STARTING WITH INTEGRAL CARE.

SO WE ABOUT WILL BE, UM, WHO'S COMING TO VISIT WITH US ACTUALLY NEXT WEEK AND OUR COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING.

AND SO WE HAVE A REAL BIG HOST OF PANELISTS THAT WILL COME IN AND, UM, WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A TRADITIONAL COMMUNITY COUNCIL APPROACH WHERE WE HEAR FROM THE PANELISTS.

WE ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE GROUND.

UH, WE REALLY GET TO HEAR AND ELEVATE THE VOICES OF THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT ARE ENGAGING WITH SERVICES.

AND THEN WE WILL PRODUCE A REPORT ON BEST PRACTICES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE CAN BOARD AT THE END OF THIS YEAR.

AND, UM, AND SO OBVIOUSLY WE WERE AT A DIFFERENT PLACE AND, YOU KNOW, YOU'RE AT THAT PLACE WHERE YOU DECIDE, WELL, DO WE STILL DO IT? YOU KNOW, THERE'S STILL A NEED FOR ENGAGEMENT AND THERE'S STILL A LOT EXCITING ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES.

SO, UM, SO PART OF WHAT WE'VE DONE SO THAT YOU SEE, UH, STAY TUNED SEPTEMBER 13, EPISODE 100, AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO HAVE A SPECIAL GUEST.

AND THAT'S WHAT WE DRAW FROM IN ORDER TO, UH, AGAIN, THE PODCAST IS CALLED GET ENGAGED BECAUSE IT'S A 10 MINUTE PODCAST PREVIEWING THE NEXT WEEK OF ACTIVITIES, RIGHT? SO IF YOU WANT TO, THERE MAY BE STUFF GOING ON.

UM, SO THE PODCAST CALENDAR WAS REALLY A TOOL WE CREATED TO BE ABLE TO ACTUALLY DO THE PODCASTS, BUT IT'S ACTUALLY A USEFUL TOOL IN AND OF ITSELF.

AND THEN, UH, THIS IS LIKE KIND OF A SNEAK PEEK.

THIS IS THE NEW FORMAT FOR THE CALENDAR CAUSE THE OTHER FORMAT WAS KIND OF REALLY HARD TO DIGEST, BUT WE BASICALLY CREATED CATEGORIES OF EVENTS THAT WE'LL HIGHLIGHT THAT MIRROR OUR GOAL STATEMENTS IN THE DASHBOARD, RIGHT? SO WE'LL HIGHLIGHT EVENTS RELATED TO SAFETY, JUSTICE AND ENGAGEMENT, HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT BASIC NEEDS ACHIEVING OUR FULL POTENTIAL.

AND THEN WE ADDED A KIND OF EQUITY CATEGORY AND ALSO A, A FREE AND FINE THAT'S THAT'S ONE OF THE FEATURES WITHIN THE PODCAST IS SOMETHING FREE AND FUN, JUST SO IT'S NOT ALWAYS HEALTH DISPARITIES AND EDUCATION DISPARITIES, AND, UM, WHICH OBVIOUSLY ARE VERY IMPORTANT.

BUT, UM, BUT AGAIN, SO, UH, SO IF YOU ACTUALLY GO TO THE PODCAST WEBSITE, NOW YOU ACTUALLY CAN SEE THIS NEW CALENDAR IN THIS FORMAT.

UM, BUT THIS IS FOR THE CURRENT YEAR, FOR CURRENT WEEKEND, THIS IS ONLY THROUGH RIGHT.

SO WE'RE GOING TO FOLLOW THIS FORMAT, UH, IN IDENTIFYING, I THINK MORE CLEARLY WHY WE'RE, WHY WE'RE ADVERTISING PARTICULAR ACTIVITIES RIGHT.

VERSUS OTHER ACTIVITIES IT'S BECAUSE THEY RELATE TO THE KINDS OF DATA AND RESEARCH WE PRESENT AS AN SO, SO EXCITED ABOUT IT.

AND SO, AND ONE OF THE PROJECTS THAT WE'RE WORKING ON, UM, VERY DILIGENTLY AS THIS LANGUAGE ACCESS PROJECT FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS.

AND WE BASICALLY HAVE A VARIETY OF WORK GROUPS THAT ARE HELPING TO DEVELOP RESOURCES, RIGHT.

TO SERVE, UM, NON-ENGLISH SPEAKERS, RIGHT WITH MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES, OR AT LEAST IDENTIFY WAYS OF CONNECTING THEM WITH, UM, SORT OF RESOURCES THAT THEY NEED.

UM, BUT, AND SO WE'RE, WE'RE KIND OF A PRETTY FAR ALONG, RIGHT.

IN TERMS OF, UM, OUR ENGAGEMENT AROUND, UM, UH, THE, THE PROJECT OR THE RESOURCES THAT WE'RE DEVELOPING FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS, JUST BECAUSE THAT'S THE LARGEST NUMBER, RIGHT.

THAT WE HAVE, LIKE JUST IN RAW TERMS, IN TERMS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENT.

UM, AND WE'RE ABOUT TO KIND OF IDENTIFY THE COMMUNITY PARTNER WE'RE GOING TO WORK WITH WHO REALLY IS GOING TO, UH, FACILITATE THE PROJECT.

SO IT'S NOT CAN STAFF, YOU KNOW, PER SE DOING ALL THE WORK, BUT WE'RE WORKING WITH THEM, UM, TO EXECUTE, YOU KNOW, THESE THINGS THAT WE ARE TRYING TO GET DONE, UH, WITH THE FUNDING WE'VE IDENTIFIED FOR THE PROJECT.

AND SO THE STATUS AGAIN IS, UM, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE, UM, THOSE FIRST TWO BULLETS HAVE ALREADY KIND OF EXPLAINED, LET'S SEE, OOPS.

UH, IN TERMS OF, UH, HAVING A SPANISH RESOURCE AND ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE, YOU KNOW, THE RFP PROCESS, WE'RE KIND OF IN THE EVALUATION RIGHT NOW, AND WE'LL PROBABLY SELECT SOMEONE TO HELP WITH THIS, UM, PROCESS BY THE END OF THE MONTH.

AND WE'LL HERE.

WE HAD OUR FIRST MEETING, YOU KNOW, AS PART OF THIS PROJECT, UM, WE'RE GONNA CREATE BASICALLY TOOLKITS FOR THREE DIFFERENT LANGUAGE COMMUNITIES OF WHICH SPANISH IS ONE.

UM, BUT WE HAVE A COMMITTEE THAT'S SORT OF LOOKING AT DATA AND NEEDS IN A VARIETY OF WAYS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT ARE THE OTHER TWO LANGUAGE COMMUNITIES WE WANT TO SELECT RIGHT.

IN THE, PROBABLY IN, YOU KNOW, ASIAN, UM, YOU KNOW, SPEAKING COMMUNITY OR ASIAN COMMUNITY, RIGHT IN THE VARIETY OF LANGUAGES THAT ARE THERE AND, YOU KNOW, THE VARIETY OF NEEDS THAT EXIST.

AND THEN FINALLY, UM, ONCE WE IDENTIFY THOSE TWO ADDITIONAL LANGUAGES, THEN WE'LL HAVE, AGAIN, WE'LL GO THROUGH A SIMILAR PROCESS, LIKE FOR THE SPANISH SPEAKING COMMUNITY WHERE WE SELECT A COMMUNITY PARTNER TO REALLY FACILITATE THE ENGAGEMENT FOR THOSE COMMUNITIES.

SO, SO STILL IN THE EARLIEST STAGES, BUT I THINK, YOU KNOW,

THIS, UM, UM, THE FOUNDATION WE'VE LAID IS GOING TO ALLOW US TO MOVE PRETTY QUICKLY NOW THAT, YOU KNOW, WE'RE GETTING PAST THE SUMMER AND EVERYONE'S GETTING BACK IN MEETING AND WORK MONTHS, THAT'S A LITTLE BIT ON LANGUAGE ACCESS, UH, EXCITED TO BE DOING THAT.

AND THANKS TO ALL OF THE CANNED PARTNERS, UH, WHO HAVE REPRESENTATIVES ON THAT COMMITTEE.

AND, UH, AND TODAY WE'RE DOING A BIT OF A, UM, FOLLOW UP REALLY TO OUR REGIONAL SUMMIT.

UM, OUR CONTINUING EXPLORATION OF, UM, YOU KNOW, HOW DO WE ENSURE AN EQUITABLE ECONOMIC RECOVERY, YOU KNOW, AFTER THE PANDEMIC.

UM, AND SO, UM, SO THAT WAS THE THEME OF OUR, OUR, UM, SUMMIT IN NOVEMBER, WHICH SEEMS LIKE SEVERAL YEARS AGO, BUT IT WAS JUST LAST NOVEMBER.

UM, AND SO I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS THAT, UH, AGAIN, WE'RE GONNA, WE SPENT THE SPRING REALLY LOOKING AT IS, IS DIFFERENT, UH, ISSUES THAT WE DIDN'T GET TO ADDRESS AT THE SUMMIT.

RIGHT.

JUST BECAUSE OF LACK OF TIME, WE ONLY HAD FOUR HOURS.

UM, AND I GUESS THIS IS KIND OF MORPHING INTO THE NEXT AGENDA ITEM, RIGHT.

WHICH IS LEARNINGS FROM THE CAN REGIONAL SUMMIT AND EXPANDING OPPORTUNITY FORUMS. IF YOU'RE WONDERING IF I, IF I'M STARTING TO GO OVER TIME.

AND THAT WAS ACTUALLY ONE OF THE THEMES OF OUR, UM, REGIONAL SUMMIT, RIGHT.

WE HAD A PANEL, UM, THAT KIND OF PROVIDED AN INTRODUCTION OR AN OVERVIEW OF PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS, UH, UM, AGAIN, TO ADDRESS WORKFORCE NEEDS, PRINCIPALLY.

THAT WAS WHAT THAT PARTICULAR PANEL, UH, REALLY FOCUSED ON.

SO AGAIN, WE KNOW WE HAVE SOME HEALTH FOLKS, UH, WHO WERE IN THE CANNED PARTNERSHIP THAT LOOK AT HEALTH.

IS THAT SOMETHING WE MIGHT LOOK AT HOW HEALTHCARE AND OUR ECONOMIC PROSPERITY, UM, LINK UP, YOU KNOW, ENERGY,

WE COULDN'T HAVE A PANEL ON WORKFORCE PARTNERSHIPS AND A PANEL ON, UM, AND A PANEL ON, UM, HOW WOMEN WOULD HAVE FARED DURING THE PANDEMIC OR HOW PEOPLE OF COLOR HAVE FARED DURING THE PANDEMIC.

AND SO I GUESS IF WE GO BACK TO THE POWERPOINT, UM, OR MAYBE YOU'RE FOLLOWING ALONG THERE, BUT, UH, BUT WE HAD A COUPLE OF FORUMS WHEN IN JANUARY WAS ON, UM, SORT OF ENTREPRENEURS OF COLOR AND THE POST PANDEMIC ECONOMIC RECOVERY.

IT SHOULD ALSO BE IN THE ED REPORT, UH THAT'S IN THE SHARED DRIVE.

UM, AND SO AGAIN, THAT HE HEARS SOME OF THE ISSUES FROM THAT PANEL, YOU KNOW, OBVIOUSLY IT'S A AN HOUR PLUS DISCUSSION THAT TOOK PLACE WITH OUR THREE, UH, UH, CHAMBER PARTNERS, THE ASIAN CHAMBER, AND, UH, OR THREE OF OUR FOUR CHAMBER PARTNERS, THE ASIAN CHAMBER, HISPANIC CHAMBER AND BLACK CHAMBER, BUT LIKE SOMEBODY, AND YOU SEE SOME OF THE ISSUES THAT EMERGED, UM, YOU KNOW, JUST DURING THE PANDEMIC, YOU KNOW, JUST KIND OF HOW DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES WERE AFFECTED BY COVID.

IF YOU GET HIT HARD OR YOUR EMPLOYEES GET HIT HARD WITH COVID, THEN THAT THAT'S A VERY DIFFICULT THING FOR, UH, YOUR BUSINESS, UH, ASIAN AMERICANS, YOU KNOW, THEY HAD ALL THE, YOU KNOW, SIMILAR CHALLENGES, BUT ON TOP OF THAT, YOU HAD THE ASIAN HATE, YOU KNOW, ISSUES THAT EMERGED ALSO.

AND JUST AGAIN, UM, JUST THE KIND OF ECONOMIC SECTORS THAT WERE HIT HARD, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF TIMES THEY HIT, UH, SOME OF THESE, UH, RACIAL AND ETHNIC COMMUNITIES, A LITTLE HARDER.

UM, YEAH.

AND THEN JUST, YOU KNOW, IN TERMS OF THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY, JUST THAT, YOU KNOW, WENT IN THREE OF THE BUSINESSES THAT CLOSE IN THAT FIRST PART OF THE PANDEMIC WAS HISPANIC.

AND, UM, AND WHAT DOES THAT MEAN IN TERMS OF KIND OF REBUILDING RIGHT, FOR, UH, FOR THESE COMMUNITIES, RIGHT? WHETHER IT'S A COMMUNITY IS DISTINCT, RIGHT.

IT HAS ITS OWN CHILD DOES A NEED.

SO, UM, SO THAT WAS A GREAT, THESE ARE ALL RECORDED.

I KNOW SAN ANTONIO HAS A VERY KIND OF ROBUST KIND OF APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM.

SO WE MIGHT BRING THEM IN SOME OTHER FOLKS FROM OTHER CITIES AROUND THE U S TO REALLY, UH, FOCUS ON THAT ISSUE.

AND IF, UH, AGAIN, THERE'S OTHER ISSUES THAT FOLKS THINK BASED ON WHAT YOU'RE READING BASED ON WHAT YOU'RE LEARNING THAT CAN, SHOULD, YOU KNOW, HAVE A FORUM AROUND, UH, WE DEFINITELY HAVE THE BANDWIDTH TO DO THAT, UM, IN THE FALL.

UH, THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

UM, I JUST WANTED TO GO OVER SOME OF THE KEY ACTIVITIES THAT, UM, AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE IS DOING AND PARTNERING WITH INDUSTRY TO MAKE A, AN IMPACT ON PEOPLE'S LIVES AND HELP THEM GET INTO A BETTER WORK ENVIRONMENT THAT ARE CAREERS AND HELP THEM, UM, PROGRESS THROUGH OUR, OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM AND TAKING INTO ACCOUNT OF COURSE, THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENT, BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL VERY INDIFFERENT.

SO I'LL TALK ABOUT SOME OF THESE AS WE GO THROUGH IS TOM ON THE NEXT SLIDE? UM, I WANT TO START BY, UM, MENTIONING THAT WE, UM, DO YOU MIND SWITCHING TO THE NEXT SLIDE? THANK YOU.

UM, SO ONE OF THE BASIS FOR A LOT OF THE WORK WE DO IS WE PARTNER WITH AUSTIN REGIONAL MANUFACTURING ASSOCIATION STANDARDS, WHICH IS CALLED ARMA FOR SHORT.

UM, AND WE WILL PARTNER WITH THEM BECAUSE THEY HAVE A COLLABORATIVE MEMBERSHIP OF DIFFERENT MANUFACTURING ORGANIZATIONS HERE IN, OR COMPANIES HERE IN AUSTIN, SMALL, MEDIUM, AND LARGE, AND IT'S, UM, A WAY TO GET, UM, A COLLABORATIVE VOICE AS TO WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE.

SO IN WORKING WITH ARMA, WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO, UH, ADDRESS SOME KEY NEEDS THAT THE COMPANIES ARE STRUGGLING WITH, UM, DOMINANTLY IT'S EMPLOYMENT, GETTING PEOPLE IN, IN HOUSE.

AND THE JOB MARKET IS STRONG RIGHT NOW, AND THEN WHERE PEOPLE IS NOT AS, AS LARGE AS IT NEEDS TO BE.

SO WE HAVE CREATED PROGRAMS TO HELP INCREASE THAT JOB PIPELINE.

UM, TRADITIONALLY IN THIS SPACE, A LOT OF TIMES THEY ONLY HIRE PEOPLE WITH EXPERIENCE.

AND SO WHAT ENDS UP HAPPENING IS THEY END UP BASICALLY STEALING EMPLOYEES FROM EACH OTHER.

SO WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO IS, IS CREATE A, UH, A BROADER SET OF, OF EMPLOYEE OWN EMPLOYEE BASE BY HAVING A WAY FOR NON-TECHNICAL OR NON-MANUFACTURING PEOPLE TO GET A QUICK, UM, JUMPSTART INTO MANUFACTURING AND COLLABORATIVE COLLABORATING WITH MANY OF THE COMPANIES THAT WILL HIRE OUR STUDENTS.

UM, FROM THIS PROGRAM THAT WE STARTED CALLED THE CERTIFIED PRODUCTION TECH.

AND WE'LL TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT IT ON A SEPARATE SLIDE, BUT AGAIN, THE KEY WAS TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF THE COMPANIES IN THE AREA, WHICH IS THEY NEED MORE SKILLED, UH, UH, EMPLOYEES.

UM, ANOTHER WAY TO ADDRESS THAT IS WE'VE ALSO STARTED OUR HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMY.

WE ARE IN THE SECOND YEAR, THE HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMY IN WHICH STUDENTS CAN FROM THEIR JUNIOR YEAR START TO TAKE ONE CLASS A SEMESTER WITH ACC, UH, AND WHEN THEY GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL, THEIR SENIOR YEAR THAT WILL HAVE COMPLETED BASICALLY THE LEVEL ONE CERTIFICATE, WHICH IS ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH THE ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE.

SO IT'S NOT AS INTENSE WHERE THEY CAN STILL, UM, DO WHAT THEY'RE DOING AND ENJOY OTHER PARTS OF HIGH SCHOOL LIFE.

BUT THEY'RE ABLE TO SIMPLY TAKE ONE CLASS A SEMESTER AND GET THOSE FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS.

AND THE CERTIFICATE IS VERY FOCUSED ON SKILLS.

IT DOESN'T, UM, ADDRESS THE, UH, GENERAL EDUCATIONAL COURSES, WHICH IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE AT THAT POINT, IF THE STUDENT GRADUATES AND HE'S NOT, OR SHE IS NOT READY TO GO INTO THE WORKFORCE, I MEAN, THERE'S NOT READY TO GO TO COLLEGE.

THEY CAN ACTUALLY JUST TRANSITION TO A JOB.

THEY'VE GOT SKILLS IN ABOUT THEIR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, AND IT GIVES THEM OPTIONS, YOU KNOW, DEBRIS OR CONTINUING YOUR DEGREE TRACK, OR YOU CAN JUST GO TO WORK AT THAT POINT.

UM, THE OTHER THING THAT WE'VE GOTTEN, UM, BENEFITED WITH THE PARTNERSHIP WITH FARMERS TO HAVE, UM, UH, AN ADVISORY BOARD THAT HELPED GUIDE US IN DESIGNING OUR BACHELOR'S DEGREE PROGRAM THAT WE WILL LAUNCH THIS FALL.

SO, UM, AGAIN, WE WANTED IT TO BE RELEVANT, UH, TO MANUFACTURING RELEVANT TO LOCAL NEEDS.

AND SO WITH A MEMBERSHIP FROM VARIOUS COMPANIES, WE WERE ABLE TO IDENTIFY COURSES THAT WOULD BE A BEST FIT FOR OUR STUDENTS TO GRADUATE WITH THIS

BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN APPLIED TECHNOLOGY.

AND THEN THE LAST PART THAT WE, UH, WORK WITH OUR MATERIALS IS TO IDENTIFY INSTRUCTORS, ALL OF OUR INSTRUCTORS HAVE INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE.

UM, AND WE WANT TO UTILIZE, UM, THAT EXPERIENCE TO TEACH SO THAT THEY CAN PUT SOME CONTEXT IN WHAT THEY'RE LEARNING AND IT MAKES IT MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE FOR THE STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND, YOU KNOW, WHY DO I NEED TO LEARN THIS? WELL, LET ME TELL YOU HOW I APPLIED IT AT WORK.

SO, UM, THAT THESE ARE FOUR KEY AREAS AND WE'VE PARTNERED WITH PHARMA TO, TO TRY TO DEVELOP, UH, IMPROVEMENTS AND METHODS TO, TO SUPPORT THE INDUSTRY AS WELL AS HELP INDIVIDUALS FIND A BETTER, A BETTER CAREER TRACK.

LET'S TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE CPT PROGRAM CAUSE IT'S BEEN DOING REALLY WELL.

AND, UH, LIKE I MENTIONED EARLIER, WE STARTED THIS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE LOCAL SEMICONDUCTOR COMPANIES TO IDENTIFY WHAT ARE THE KEY SKILLS THAT YOU NEED FOR AN ENTRY-LEVEL, UM, EMPLOYMENT.

UM, TYPICALLY AGAIN, YOU WORKED IN RETAIL SALES OR ANY OTHER INDUSTRY, THEY WOULD NOT TYPICALLY THAT EACH OF YOU, YOU, UH, BECAUSE THERE'S SUCH A LEARNING GAP.

AND SO WHAT WE DID IS WE, UM, UTILIZED A NATIONAL CREDENTIAL CALLED THE CERTIFIED PRODUCTION TECHNICIAN, UM, WHICH IS A NATIONAL CREDENTIAL THAT WILL BENEFIT THE STUDENTS.

BUT WE EMBEDDED IN THAT CURRICULUM, THE RELEVANT HANDS-ON SKILLS THAT THE SEMICONDUCTOR COMPANIES ASKED FOR.

AND THEY SPECIFICALLY, WE, YOU KNOW, WE WORKED WITH THEM FOR SEVERAL WEEKS TO REALLY FLUSH OUT WHAT IT IS THAT WOULD MAKE IT EASY FOR THEM TO TAKE A NON-TECHNICAL NON-MANUFACTURING PERSON, TRAIN THEM FOR EIGHT WEEKS, SIX TO EIGHT WEEKS, AND THEN ONBOARD THEM QUICKLY.

UM, AND WHAT THIS DOES IS AGAIN, EXPANDS THAT PIPELINE.

IT CREATES A MECHANISM FOR PEOPLE TO ENTER MANUFACTURING, UH, AND, AND REALLY, I LOOK AT IT AS A CAREER BECAUSE MANUFACTURING HAS CHANGED SO MUCH THAT IT'S NOT JUST A JOB OF PUSHING BUTTONS, IT'S BECOME HIGHLY SKILLED AND IT'S BECOME A REALLY GOOD CAREER PATH.

AND I, AND IT'S BEEN A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR ME AND I IT'S, IT'S A PASSION OF MINE TO SHARE THAT WITH OTHERS, BECAUSE YOU CAN HAVE A BREAK, UM, UH, CAREER PATH IN MANUFACTURING, REGARDLESS OF THE LEVEL OF EDUCATION YOU'VE PURSUED.

UH, IN ADDITION, UH, ONE OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS REACHED OUT TO US EARLY LAST YEAR IN JANUARY, AND WE ACTUALLY PARTNERED WITH MAYNARD HIGH SCHOOL TO DELIVER THE SAME PROGRAM TO NINE GRADUATING SENIORS, UM, THAT WERE ABOUT TO GRADUATE.

AND SO FOR THE LAST THREE MONTHS OF THEIR HIGH SCHOOL, WE WOULD, UM, DELIVER THIS CURRICULUM TO THEM DURING THEIR CLASS TIME.

AND AT THAT POINT, THEY WERE ABLE TO HIRE, GO DIRECTLY TO APPLY MATERIALS AND GET EMPLOYED.

AND OF THOSE NINE, I THINK, FIVE WENT ON TO BE HIRED.

AND IT'S NOT THAT THEY WEREN'T SELECTED.

THEY WOULD'VE TAKEN ALL NINE, BUT I THINK THE OTHER FOUR JUST CHOSE NOT TO CONTINUE, BUT IT'S A GREAT PATH FOR AN STUDENT TO JUST GET RIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL, GET SOME SKILLS AND THEN GO INTO A JOB AND THINK THE MINIMUM WAGE WAS $20 AN HOUR AT THAT POINT.

ALL RIGHT.

SO THIS PROBLEM'S BEEN GOING ON FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS, IT'S GROWING IT'S AND WE WANT IT TO GROW BECAUSE WE WANT MORE PEOPLE IN MANUFACTURING AND WE WANT THEM TO GET THAT OPPORTUNITY.

SO WHAT'S THE NEXT STEP? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? UH, IF YOU GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE, YOU WILL SEE THAT THERE'S OTHER WAYS TO CONTINUE YOUR GROWTH.

ONCE YOU'RE IN.

UM, WE HAVE A LOT OF WHAT WE CALL EARN AND LEARN PARTNERSHIPS, UH, FOR EXAMPLE, SAMSUNG HIRES, UM, HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, UH, RIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL TO JOIN THEIR APPRENTICE PROGRAM.

SO, UM, THEY USED TO DO IT ON THEIR OWN.

NOW WE DO IT IN PARTNERSHIP BECAUSE STUDENTS AT THAT AGE NEED A LITTLE GUIDANCE.

SO WE TRY TO COLLABORATE WITH THEM BY ESTABLISHING A, UM, A COHORT MODEL AT THE COLLEGE WHERE THEY TAKE CLASSES TOGETHER AND THEY'RE ALIGNED SO THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO GO FROM CAMPUS TO CAMPUS.

AND, UM, AND IT GIVES US AN OPPORTUNITY TO MENTOR THEM IN THE, WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE A COLLEGE STUDENT, UH, SOME CAREER ADVICE, THINGS OF THAT NATURE.

UM, AND THESE STUDENTS WILL BASICALLY BE MENTORED FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS.

I MEAN, I'M SORRY, PRO FOR THE FIRST YEAR, UM, UPON THE SECOND YEAR, WE'VE NOW EMBEDDED OUR TRADITIONAL STUDENTS IN THOSE SAME COURSES, UH, AND SAMSUNG WAS WILLING TO TAKE ART ACC STUDENTS AND INTERVIEW THEM FOR, UM, THE APPRENTICE PROGRAM TO CONTINUE YEAR TWO AS AN APPRENTICE.

SO IT'S BEEN A REALLY GOOD MODEL WHERE THEY COME IN WITH STUDENTS THAT THEY SELECT, THEN OUR STUDENTS ARE PAIRED IN THOSE SAME CLASSES.

AND THEN BY THE SECOND YEAR THEY HIRE SOME OF OUR STUDENTS IN THE SAME PROGRAM.

AND THIS PROGRAM ALLOWS THEM TO FOCUS ON FULL-TIME SCHOOL.

THEY WORK UH PART-TIME AND THEN IF THEY MAINTAIN A CERTAIN GPA, THEY ARE REIMBURSED FOR THE TUITION.

SO IT'S A REALLY GOOD PROGRAM.

UM, SECONDLY, WE WORKING WITH APPLIED MATERIALS, THEY ARE DOING THE SAME THING, BUT DIFFERENT.

THEY WANT TO CREATE A DEPARTMENT OF LABOR APPRENTICESHIP.

THAT'S SET TO START, I THINK, IN THE SPRING, UM, AND THEIR MODELS WILL DIFFERENT AND WE'RE WORKING AGAIN WITH THEM TO IDENTIFY WHAT JUST THE COURSES THEY CAN TAKE.

AND HOW DO WE CREATE THAT COHORT? BECAUSE IT MAKES IT MUCH MORE LIKELY THE STUDENTS WILL SUCCEED.

IF THEY'VE GOT A GROUP OF STUDENTS THAT THEY'RE GOING THROUGH THIS PROCESS WITH.

UM, WE'VE ALSO WORKED WITH, YOU KNOW, WITH TESSA TO SUPPORT THEIR HIGH SCHOOL

GRADUATE PROGRAM THROUGH EARLY TRAINING.

SO THEY COME TO US FOR, UH, FIVE, SEVEN WEEKS OF TRAINING, AND THEN THEY GO INTO THE JOB RIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES IS JUST SCHOLARSHIPS.

WE HAVE LOTS OF SCHOLARSHIPS THAT ARE BEING, UM, PROVIDED TO OUR STUDENTS.

UH, AND A LOT OF THEM ARE INDUSTRY SPONSORED.

THEY DONATE WE'D MATCH IT.

AND THEN THIS, THE STUDENTS APPLY AND WE TRY TO CREATE A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE MANUFACTURING COMPANIES, THEIR SCHOLARSHIPS, SUPPORT, AND STUDENTS WHO POTENTIALLY WILL WORK WITH THEM IN THE FUTURE.

SO WE TRY TO AS BEST AS POSSIBLE FIND OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS, ALL KINDS OF OPPORTUNITIES, BECAUSE EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT NEEDS.

SO WE WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH COMPANIES TO CONNECT JOBS TO STUDENTS, TO THE WAY THAT THEY ARE, WHETHER IT'S PART-TIME INTERNSHIPS, WE'RE WAITING TO, THEY'RE GRADUATING.

NOW WE'VE STARTED SEEING MORE AND MORE COMPANIES WANTING TO PARTNER WITH THESE STUDENTS EARLY BECAUSE THEY KNOW IF THEY WAIT TILL GRADUATION, THEN THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE TO FIGHT FOR THEM BECAUSE THERE'S, EVERYBODY'S LOOKING FOR THEM AT THAT POINT.

SO WE'RE STARTING TO GET MORE AND MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PART-TIME WORK AND INTERNSHIPS, NEXT SLIDE.

AND THIS IS JUST, I WANTED TO SHOW YOU KIND OF OUR COMPLETE ACC MANUFACTURING PATHWAY.

ONE OF THE UNIQUE THINGS ABOUT OUR ACC MANUFACTURING DEPARTMENT IS THAT WE'VE CONNECTED THE DOTS BETWEEN NON-CREDIT AND CREDIT.

THEY'RE ALL UNDER ONE LEADERSHIP.

AND SO WE CAN NOW ARTICULATE, UH, CREDITS MORE EASILY.

WE USE THE SAME INSTRUCTORS FOR CREDIT AND NON-CREDIT.

SO WE MEET THE SAME EXPECTATIONS THAT, THAT THE ACADEMIC SIDE, UH, NEEDS.

AND WE, UM, WE TRY TO CREATE THIS ALIGNMENT SO THAT PEOPLE CAN HAVE A STEP STACKABLE CREDENTIALS AS THEY LIKE TO SAY SO THAT THEY'RE NOT, UM, DISCOURAGED BECAUSE OF THE ONLY, UH, THE ONLY GAIN IS AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL.

YOU DON'T WANT TO WAIT TWO YEARS TO FIND YOU'VE MADE SOME SUCCESS.

SO WE TRY TO GIVE THEM STEPS ALONG THE WAY WHERE THEY CAN SUCCEED.

AND IF THEY HAVE TO WORK FIRST, THAT'S FINE.

WE ARTICULATE TO CREDIT AND THAT HOPEFULLY WILL MOTIVATE THEM TO CONTINUE THEIR GROWTH.

UH, WE ALSO TRAIN APP COMPANIES A LOT OF TIMES, SO THAT'S ANOTHER WAY WE STILL ARTICULATED TO CREDIT IF WE DO IT THROUGH IN-HOUSE TRAINING OR AT ACC, UH, IT'S, AS LONG AS THEY'RE CONTINUING ON THEIR EDUCATIONAL PATH, WE WILL TRY TO MATCH THAT UP TO THE ACADEMIC SIDE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

SO YOU CAN SEE OUR TWO FIRST, UH, PURPLE BOXES ARE BASICALLY OUR NON-CREDIT PROGRAMS. AND THEN WE START TO STEP THEM INTO THE FIRST YEAR AND THEN THE SECOND YEAR, AND THEN FINALLY THE BACHELOR STUDENT.

AND, UM, AGAIN, BY CATERING TO THAT QUICK TRAINING, IT GETS THEM IN THE DOOR.

AND AGAIN, AT LEAST HALF OF THOSE STUDENTS FIND THAT ONCE THEY'RE IN THE DOOR, THEY START TO SEE, OH, I CAN DO MORE WHAT'S NEXT.

THEY ARE NOW EARLY MATTERS GROUPS IN DALLAS, HOUSTON, SAN ANTONIO, EL PASO, AND WACO.

AND WE COME TOGETHER UNTIL ALIGN ON STATE ADVOCACY EFFORTS IN THE EARLY LEARNING SPACE SLASH THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE OF FOLKS WHO ARE, UM, LEADING THE WORK AT EARLY MATTERS.

BUT AS WE KNOW FROM THE EFFORTS LED BY CAN TO ACHIEVE AN EQUITABLE ECONOMIC RECOVERY, THAT PROSPERITY DOESN'T APPLY TO EVERYONE WE KNOW IN AUSTIN THAT 32,000 CHILDREN UNDER AGE SIX AND TRAVIS COUNTY THAT LIVE IN HOUSEHOLDS WITH LOW INCOME.

THAT'S MORE THAN ONE IN EVERY THREE CHILDREN LIVE IN HOUSEHOLDS WITH LOW INCOME, KNOW THAT 90% OF THESE ARE CHILDREN OF COLOR.

WHEN WE LOOK AT THE RESOURCES, WE HAVE TO SUPPORT VERY YOUNG CHILDREN WITH SERVICES AND RESOURCES AND ACCESS TO EARLY CHILDHOOD SUPPORTS.

ONLY 36% OF OUR CHILDREN, AGE BIRTH TO FOUR ARE RECEIVING ANY KIND OF EARLY LEARNING SERVICES AT ALL.

THAT INCLUDES PARENTS SUPPORT EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION HEADSTART.

AND PRE-K EXCELLENT.

SO, AS I SAID, EARLY MATTERS GREATER AUSTIN WAS BUILT AS AN ALLIANCE WITH BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACCESS TO HIGH QUALITY EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION AND OUR COMMUNITY.

AND STATE'S SHORT LONG-TERM ECONOMIC SUCCESS.

WE HAVE THREE PILLARS OF WORK DANCING, BEST PLACE FOR WORKING PARENTS AS A WAY FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES TO ADOPT RESEARCH RESEARCH, PROVEN FAMILY-FRIENDLY POLICIES THAT ALSO POSITIVELY IMPACT THE BUSINESS BOTTOM LINE, AND THEN INFLUENCING PUBLIC POLICY BY ADVOCATING FOR LOCAL AND STATEWIDE POLICY AND FUNDING TO INCREASE ACCESS TO HIGH QUALITY EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION, AND THEN ADVANCING INNOVATION AND EDUCATION BY INCUBATING AND PILOTING INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO CHALLENGES OF ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY IN THE EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION SECTOR.

NEXT SLIDE WE KNOW WHEN CHILDREN START BEHIND, THEY STAY BEHIND A LARGE GAP IN SCHOOL READINESS BETWEEN OUR NON LOW INCOME AND LOW INCOME CHILDREN AND OUR COMMUNITY AND CHILDREN OF COLOR ARE DISPROPORTIONALLY NOT READY FOR SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN READY COMPARED TO THEIR NON-HISPANIC WHITE PEERS.

AND WE KNOW THIS COSTS US IN TERMS OF BOTH EDUCATIONAL INVESTMENTS IN THE LONG RUN AND ECONOMY IN TRAVIS COUNTY, AS I SAID, ONLY 36% OF OUR CHILDREN UNDER FOUR GET RECEIVING ANY SERVICES.

AND WHEN WE THINK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY BRAIN DEVELOPMENT, IT'S NOT SURPRISING TO SEE THESE GAPS IN READINESS, UM, HERE, EXCUSE ME, UM, SEE THESE GAPS IN READINESS, AS IT APPEARS THAT MANY LOW-INCOME CHILDREN ARE ABLE TO HAVE ACCESS TO ENRICHING ENVIRONMENTS THAT HELP THEM THRIVE, AND SPECIFICALLY WANT TO CALL ATTENTION TO THE LACK OF ACCESS OF HIGH QUALITY CHILDCARE.

THERE WAS A STUDY PUBLISHED BY THE US CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FOUNDATION DURING THE PAST YEAR THAT INDICATED THAT TEXAS LOSES NINE, $9 BILLION IN REVENUE ANNUALLY BECAUSE OF BREAKDOWNS IN CHILDCARE.

THAT MEANS PEOPLE WHO AREN'T ABLE TO ACCESS AND PARTICIPATE IN THE WORKFORCE BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE CHILDCARE AS WELL AS LOSS OF PRUDENT PRODUCTIVITY, BECAUSE CAN'T FOCUS AT WORK BECAUSE THEY'RE CONCERNED ABOUT THE HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELLBEING OF THEIR CHILDREN WHILE THEY ARE AT WORK BECAUSE THEY LACK ACCESS TO HIGH QUALITY CARE.

AND OF COURSE, THE STATISTIC THAT 55% OF PARENTS WHO VOLUNTARILY LEAVE THEIR JOBS DO SO WHEN THEIR CHILDREN ARE TOO OLD

AND WE KNOW THERE IS A HIGH RETURN ON INVESTMENT WHEN WE DO INVEST EARLY SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN PARENTS' INCOME AND THE LONG-TERM TRAJECTORY FOR CHILDREN, AS FAR AS THEIR EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES, IF THEY START WITH A STRONG, EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION EXPERIENCE, NEXT SIDE SAYS TYPICALLY, UM, THE FOCUS ON WHAT EARLY MATTERS IS DOING AND HAS DONE FOR TWO YEARS, WE HAVE LAUNCHED THERE FOR WORKING PARENTS INITIATIVE.

AND LAST YEAR WE HAD OVER 140 LOCAL AREA BUSINESSES RECEIVE A DESIGNATION AS A BEST PLACE OF WORKING PARENTS, CELEBRATING THE POLICIES AND PRACTICES THAT THEY HAVE, THAT SUPPORT PARENTS IN PRIMARY ROLE AS THEIR CHILD'S FIRST TEACHER AND PARENT.

WE ALSO ENGAGE IN ADVOCACY THAT RESULTED IN STRENGTHENING AND SUPPORTING THE CHILDCARE SECTOR AND THE EARLY CARE SYSTEM AND EDUCATION SYSTEM THROUGH THE, UM, DAMAGING IMPACTS OF THE PANDEMIC, AND THEN STATE LEGISLATION AS WELL TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO HIGH QUALITY CARE.

AND WE ALSO WANTED TO CELEBRATE THAT THE CITY OF AUSTIN ALSO RECENTLY CODIFIED A POLICY TO EXPLORE IT, THE INCLUSION OF CHILDCARE FACILITIES IN CITY OWNED OR LEASED PROPERTY.

AND THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE ARE SEEING A NUMBER OF QUALITY CHILDCARE CENTERS CLOSE AND OUR COMMUNITY BECAUSE RENTS AND PROPERTY TAXES AND PROPERTY VALUES ARE SO HIGH, THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO, UM, MEET THOSE COSTS AND COMPENSATE STAFF.

UM, UM, FREQUENTLY REFERRED TO CHILDCARE IS, UM, IS A THIN MARKET.

UM, IT SIMPLY DOES THE WAY WE FUND CHILDCARE SIMPLY DOESN'T WORK, UM, IN THE MARKETPLACE.

SO SKIP, SKIP THE NEXT SLIDE AND GO TO THE FOLLOWING.

WE'VE LEANED INTO FAMILY FRIENDLY PRACTICES AND TRYING TO ENCOURAGE BUSINESSES TO ENGAGE AND, UM, FAMILY FRIENDLY POLICIES AND BENEFITS BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT NOT ONLY IS IT BENEFICIAL FOR CHILDREN AND, BUT IT ALSO IMPROVES THE BOTTOM LINE FOR BUSINESSES.

WE KNOW THAT 83% OF MILLENNIALS SAY THEY'D LEAVE THEIR CURRENT JOB FOR ONE WITH MORE FAMILY FRIENDLY BENEFITS AND A COMPETITIVE WORKFORCE TO RECRUIT AND RETAIN A TALENTED WORKFORCE FAMILY FRIENDLY POLICIES AND PRACTICES CAN HELP AID IN RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION.

WE ALSO KNOW WHEN WE'RE LOOKING AT WHO IS NOT WORKING 70% OF NON-WORKING MIDDLE-SKILLED PARENTS SITE CHILDCARE AS ONE OF THE TOP FIVE REASONS THAT THEY ARE NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE WORKFORCE.

AND NATIONALLY ONE THIRD OF WOMEN AGES 25 TO 44, WHO ARE UNEMPLOYED SAID THE REASON WAS CHILDCARE DEMANDS, NEXT SITE.

SO THE BEST PLACE FOR WORKING PARENTS PROMOTES, UH, ONE FIRST OF ITS KIND FREE THREE MINUTE BUSINESS.

UM, BUT ON THE OTHER WAY, ON THE OTHER HAND IS IF YOU HAVE 150 COMPANIES DOING IT WITH ZERO MONEY COMING IN, MAYBE THERE'S, AGAIN, THERE'S SOME RESOURCES THAT CAN BE ALLOCATED ON THE PUBLIC SIDE TO BUMP UP THAT NUMBER SO THAT YOU HAVE THESE, UM, OPPORTUNITIES, RIGHT.

FOR FOLKS WHO MAYBE WON'T COME BACK OR CAN'T COME BACK BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF, UH, ACCESS TO THE CHILDCARE.

AND WHEN WE HAD THAT CONVERSATION, UM, AND THE EXPANDING OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM, RIGHT.

WE HAD DIFFERENT SECTORS REPRESENTED RIGHT.

IN THIS, THESE ISSUE OF HAVING A FAMILY FRIENDLY WORKPLACE REALLY IS VERY DIFFERENT.

IF YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT HOSPITALITY VERSUS FINANCE, YOU KNOW, VERSUS, UM, ENGINEERING, YOU KNOW, JUST EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE KIND OF DEPEND A LITTLE BIT ON THE INDUSTRY SECTOR YOU'RE IN.

AND, UM, AND THAT'S A VERY GOOD CONVERSATION THAT WE HAD.

AND, UM, I THINK PART OF WHAT, UH, THE INFORMATION KATHY WAS SHARING IS ABOUT, UM, WHEN THEY DO AGREE TO CREATE THIS FAMILY FRIENDLY WORKPLACE OR A BEST PLACE FOR WORKING PARENTS, I STILL USE THE OLD TERM, WHICH IS FAMILY FRIENDLY WORKPLACE, BUT IT'S THE BEST PLACE FOR WORKING PARENTS.

UM, THEN, UM, THEN AGAIN, HOW, HOW MANY OF THOSE 10 POLICIES OR STRATEGIES ARE, ARE THEY UTILIZING WRITER? WHICH ONES ARE, YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW, ESPECIALLY FOR, UM, YOU KNOW, THE BENEFITS AND IN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY, AGAIN, LIKE EVERY INDUSTRY HAS ITS OWN CHALLENGES.

SO, UM, SO I THINK KATHY IS NOT ABLE TO MAKE IT BACK BECAUSE HER COMPUTER'S NOT COOPERATING, BUT I THINK YOU KIND OF GET THE, UNFORTUNATELY WE CAN'T ASK THE QUESTIONS.

SO, UM, YOU KNOW, WE AIM TO BE A SMART CITY AND I ACTUALLY STARTED MY CAREER IN THE SEMICONDUCTOR INDUSTRY IN AUSTIN AND, YOU KNOW, FOR A LONG TIME, UM, YOU KNOW, WITH THE TIME THAT MCC CAME TO AUSTIN IN 1996, YOU KNOW, AUSTIN WAS A HUGE DRAW FOR TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES BECAUSE OF THE GREAT QUALITY OF LIFE AND, UM, ACCESS TO EDUCATION THAT FOLKS HAD.

UM, SO HOW CAN WE MAINTAIN THAT SMART CITY AND ENSURE THAT OUR INNOVATION ECONOMY, IT IS INCLUSIVE, UM, THAT RESIDENTS WHO ARE LONGTIME AUSTINITES, WHO MAY BE THIRD, FIFTH, 10TH GENERATION AUSTINITES ARE A PART OF OUR ECONOMY TODAY.

AND, UM, ESSENTIALLY IN TALKING WITH RESIDENTS, YOU KNOW, ASKED WHY CAN'T EVERY, EVERY RESIDENT HAVE, UM, AN AFFORDABLE FREE, WHICH MEANS FREE, UM, HIGH-SPEED INTERNET CONNECTION IN THEIR HOMES AND, UM, OUR, OUR, UH, PROPERTIES AND NEXT SLIDE ROLL, UM, SPAN 18 PROPERTIES SERVING ABOUT 5,000 PEOPLE IN PUBLIC HOUSING SPAN FROM NORTH TO SOUTH ACROSS THE EASTERN CRESCENT HERE.

UM, THOSE ARE, THOSE ARE HOUSING AUTHORITY, YOU KNOW, SUBSIDIZED, UM, FORMERLY PUBLIC HOUSING PROPERTIES, BUT WE ALSO HAVE, UM, 6,500 FAMILIES WHO USE A HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER, AND THEY MAY LIVE ON THE PRIVATE RENTAL MARKET AND THEY OFTEN LIVE IN THE PROXIMITY OF THESE HOUSING AUTHORITY PROPERTIES.

UM, SO, SO WE DID A SURVEY IN 2014 AND, UM, THIS WAS AT A TIME WHEN WIRED MAGAZINE, CATHERINE, KEVIN DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN.

AND WHAT WE FOUND IS THAT OF ALL 10 POLICIES, IF YOU GO BACK ONE SLIDE, UM, ANY FORM OF CHILDCARE ASSISTANCE, IT'S THE KIND OF BENEFIT THAT IS LEAST LIKELY TO BE OFFERED BY ANY OF OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES AND OF THOSE BUSINESSES THAT DID OFFER ANY KIND OF CHILDCARE ASSISTANCE, BACKUP CARE, ONSITE CHILDCARE, UM, WE'RE PREDOMINANTLY THE MEDIUM OR LARGE SIZED BUSINESSES.

SO THOSE WITH OVER 200 EMPLOYEES, UM, AND WE ALSO LEARNED THAT TECH AND HIGH TECH AND SOFTWARE COMPANIES WERE MOST LIKELY TO OFFER THEM THE LARGEST NUMBER OF FAMILY-FRIENDLY POLICIES AND BENEFITS AND NATIONAL LAW.

ACTUALLY, OUR GOVERNMENTAL INSTITUTIONS WERE LEAST LIKELY TO OFFER A ROBUST ARRAY OF FAMILY FRIENDLY POLICIES AND PRACTICES, BUT WE KNOW THAT BOTH THE CITY OF AUSTIN AND TRAVIS COUNTY HAVE, UM, ACTUALLY PARTICIPATED IN THIS ASSESSMENT AND THEY THEY'VE ALSO BEEN ASSESSING AND LOOKING AT, UM, HOW TO IMPROVE THEIR FAMILY FRIENDLY BENEFITS, BUT WE ARE THIS INFORMATION.

UM, WE'RE DEVELOPING A TOOLKIT FOR BUSINESSES TO, UH, LEARN MORE ABOUT DIFFERENT WAYS, DIFFERENT SCALES OF SUPPORTING SPECIFICALLY IN ADDRESSING THE CHILDCARE NEED IN PARTICULAR IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.

AND WE'RE ALSO USING THIS TO IDENTIFY OPPORTUNITIES, TO GATHER MORE INFORMATION, TO DIG A LITTLE DEEPER.

AND I'LL JUST ONE EXAMPLE WE'VE BEEN PARTNERING WITH GOOD WORK AUSTIN, UM, TO REALLY ENGAGE FOLKS IN THE HOSPITALITY SECTOR OR THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY AND IDENTIFY, UM, WHAT'S WORKING WELL, WHAT'S NOT WORKING WELL.

AND FROM THAT WORK, WE DID REALIZE, UM, TO BETTER UNDERSTAND ACCESS TO NON-TRADITIONAL HOURS CHILDCARE IN OUR COMMUNITY.

AND WE WERE ABLE, ABLE TO SECURE SOME COVID RELIEF FUNDS TO US IN A STUDY WITH THE URBAN INSTITUTE.

THAT'S NOT ONLY DOING A LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS, BUT WILL HELP US INFORM SOME PILOT INITIATIVES TO TRY AND ADDRESS THAT.

SO, UM, WE HOPE THAT, UH, WE, IN THE COMING YEAR, WE CAN JUST PROMOTE PARTICIPATION AND BEST PLACE FOR WORKING PARENTS, UM, EVEN MUCH MORE BROADLY AND WIDELY IN THE COMMUNITY.

SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW BUSINESSES ARE SUPPORTING PARENTS, UM, PARTICULARLY A VERY YOUNG CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY AND HOW OUR WORK CAN HELP, UM, IMPROVE WHAT BUSINESSES ARE ABLE TO OFFER, BECAUSE WE KNOW IT'S BENEFICIAL TO BOTH THE BUSINESSES AND THE FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITY.

THESE RESOURCES, RIGHT.

BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, RIGHT NOW THE TALK CARE PROVIDERS GET THE RESOURCES FROM THE PARENTS, RIGHT.

AND THEN,

BUT THE EMPLOYERS WANT TO HELP THEIR EMPLOYEES, BUT WHERE WITH, WITH CHILDCARE PROVIDER, RIGHT.

OR WHO'S GOING TO PROVIDE THE SERVICE AND THEN THE PUBLIC SECTOR WANTS TO HELP, BUT WHENEVER THE PUBLIC SECTOR DOES ANYTHING, EVERYBODY WANTS THEM TO PAY FOR THE WHOLE THING.

RIGHT.

SO IT SEEMS LIKE THERE'S A TRIANGULATION HERE OF RESOURCES THAT IF WE CREATE A SYSTEM, UM, THAT WE COULD, YOU KNOW, UH, HAVE A BETTER OUTCOME.

AND MAYBE AGAIN, IF WE LOOK AT THIS SUBSET OF CHILDCARE FOR NON-TRADITIONAL HOURS, MAYBE THERE'S SOME KIND OF FUNDING MECHANISM OR MODEL THAT'S CREATED THAT HELPS US WITH THE BROADER CHALLENGES WE HAVE WITH ACCESS.

SO, UH, I DO APPRECIATE ALL THE HARD WORK AND JUST THE FACT THAT Y'ALL GREW THEM NUMBERS RIGHT FROM LAST, FROM A HUNDRED LAST YEAR, 240 THIS YEAR PARTICIPATING COMPANIES.

UM, BUT, UH, IT'S VERY EXCITING AGAIN, JUST TO SEE, YOU KNOW, FOLKS IN OUR COMMUNITY STEPPING UP AND MAKING A COMMITMENT WITHOUT NECESSARILY HAVING THEIR HANDOUT, YOU KNOW, BUT, UM, BUT IT ALSO MAKES BUSINESS SENSE, RIGHT? THAT'S WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS.

AND THE ONE ASK IS JUST TO ENCOURAGE BUSINESSES, TO KNOW THAT, UM, REALLY IT'S FOR US TO GATHER AS MUCH INFORMATION TO SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY.

AND WE KNOW THERE ARE A LOT OF BUSINESSES THAT SIMPLY BY VIRTUE OF SIZE, OUR INDUSTRY ARE GOING TO STRUGGLE IN SOME OF THESE AREAS, BUT WE, YOU KNOW, WE CAN'T, UM, HELP COME UP WITH CREATIVE SOLUTIONS UNTIL WE KNOW, UM, WHAT, WHAT PROBLEMS WE'RE TRYING TO ADDRESS.

SO, UM, WE DO KNOW THAT MOST OF THE BUSINESSES THAT ARE OFFERING A ROBUST SLATE OF POLICIES AND PRACTICES THAT ARE VERY SUPPORTIVE OR TEND TO BE THOSE THAT ARE, UM, MORE HIGHLY PAID EMPLOYEES AND MORE RESOURCES TO INVEST.

AND THEN THOSE MORE CLOSELY IN THE SERVICE SECTOR, UM, STRUGGLE TO DO THAT.

SO HOW CAN WE BECOME CREATIVE IN OUR COMMUNITY TO SOLVE THAT GAP? UM, BECAUSE PARENTS CAN'T PAY MORE CHILDCARE PROGRAMS CAN'T DO WITHOUT LESS.

AND WE HAVE LIMITED RESOURCES.

SO OUR INITIAL THOUGHT WAS JUST, WE WANT TO HAVE A, I SOLVE THE HOMEWORK GAP.

WE WANT TO ENABLE RESIDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FROM HOME USING THEIR COMPUTERS.

AND, UM, THEY WILL NEED THAT HIGH SPEED INTERNET CONNECTION.

AND SO IN SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, WITHIN A FEW YEARS, UH, WITHIN FIVE YEARS, WE SAW AN INCREASE FROM 4% TO 63% OF HOUSEHOLDS HAVING A VERY HIGH SPEED, FREE INTERNET CONNECTION, WHICH MEANS IT'S ALWAYS ON.

AND, UM, ABOUT 1200 HOUSE HAKA HOUSEHOLDS EARNED DEVICES.

HOW DID THOSE, HOW DID THEY EARN THOSE DEVICES? WELL, AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE, UM, REALLY WAS THE, WAS THE FIRST TO STEP FORWARD AND, AND WORK WITH US.

WE WORK TOGETHER VERY CAREFULLY AND I THINK CHRIS IS STILL ON THE CALL.

CHRIS SALVINI WAS INVOLVED IN SOME OF THOSE EARLY DISCUSSIONS ABOUT HOW CAN WE SAVE THOSE DEVICES THAT ARE GOING TO THE, UH, RECYCLING TO AUSTIN RESOURCE RECOVERY? UM, THEY ACTUALLY CURRENTLY HAVE AN OVERFLOW OF DEVICES, UM, THAT ARE, THAT ARE IMAGED WITH MICROSOFT, UM, OFFICE AND, UM, AND WINDOWS OF THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO AUSTIN NONPROFITS.

UM, AND, AND THEN NOW WE ALSO HAVE SEVERAL CORPORATE DONORS AND WE PARTNERED WITH, UM, THE AUSTIN FORUM ON TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY, SO THAT EVERY MONTH, UM, MEMBERS, UM, RECEIVE INFORMATION ABOUT AUSTIN PATHWAYS AND READ WHAT RESIDENTS ARE TRYING TO DO WITH DEVICES AND, AND MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC CAN DONATE THEIR DEVICES TO, TO US TO PROVIDE TO RESIDENTS, UM, HERE AT NORTH LOOP.

UM, FOR EXAMPLE, UH, THAT WE HAVE SEVERAL RESIDENTS WHO ARE VISUALLY IMPAIRED AND WE PUT OUT A CALL FOR A PARTICULAR KIND OF VERY EXPENSIVE DEVICE THAT AN AUSTIN FORUM MEMBER, UM, MIGHT BE, UM, MIGHT BE, UM, UM, YOU KNOW, YOU'RE PHASING OUT AFTER A YEAR, BUT IT'S, HEY, IT'S ONLY A YEAR OLD AND WE RECEIVED FIVE OF THOSE AND WE WERE ABLE TO MEET THOSE, THOSE REQUESTS OF THOSE FOLKS WHO ARE VISUALLY IMPAIRED, UM, WITH THOSE DEVICES VERY QUICKLY THROUGH THAT CHANNEL ANOTHER, YOU KNOW, VERY CRITICAL ELEMENT OF ALL THE WORK THAT WE DO.

WE HAVE A WONDERFUL WORK STUDY INTERNSHIP WITH AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

UM, WE HAVE HAD TO DATE OVER 150 IT INTERNS WHO WORK 19 HOURS PER WEEK.

UM, THEY WORK BETWEEN NINE WEEKS IN THE SUMMER AND 17 WEEKS IN THE FALL AND THE SPRING.

UM, THEY WORKED TO APPLY THEIR IT SKILLS TO HELPING HACA RESIDENTS NAVIGATE, UM, WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES, EDUCATION, HEALTH, AND WELLNESS, UM, AND OTHER KINDS OF OPPORTUNITIES USING THEIR DEVICES.

AND SO THAT'S BEEN A REALLY CRITICAL, UM, COMPONENT THAT PROGRAM, UM, WHICH IS LED BY DAVID BORDEN.

UM, SOME OF THOSE STUDENTS ARE ADULT CAREER SCHOLARS AND OTHERS OF THOSE STUDENTS ARE CAPITAL IDEAS STUDENTS.

AND WE'VE HAD EVEN HACA RESIDENTS WHO ARE CAPITAL IDEAS, STUDENTS ASSIGNED TO US BY ACC FOR OUR WORK STUDY INTERNSHIP, AND THEY REALLY BECOME THOSE NEAR PEER MENTORS.

UM, THAT THAT RESIDENTS REALLY LOOK UP TO AND, UM, YOU KNOW, WHAT'S WONDERFUL IS THEY DEEPLY UNDERSTAND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND THE CONSTRAINTS OF RESIDENTS.

SO THEY'RE ABLE TO INNOVATE MUCH MORE TIMELY, YOU KNOW, THEN, THEN SOMEONE THAT DOESN'T HAVE THAT BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE THE LAST CRITICAL PART OF OUR, OF ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS. AND IT'S A PART THAT IS MOST EASILY FUNDED BY CORPORATE, UM, PARTNERS.

UM, WE HIRE HACA RESIDENTS AS, UM, VOLUNTEERS, THEY WORK ON A VOLUNTEER STIPEND BASIS, OR WE CONTRACT WITH THEM TO LEARN ALL ABOUT A FIELD, TO LEARN ABOUT ENERGY EFFICIENCY, TRANSPORTATION MOBILITY, TO STUDY UP ON ALL THAT, UM, TO OUTREACH TO THEIR NEIGHBORS, TO INFORM THEM OF OPPORTUNITIES TO HOLD CLASSES AND COMMUNITY ROOMS, TO EDUCATE THOSE, THOSE FAMILIES ABOUT HOW TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THOSE OPPORTUNITIES.

AND FINALLY, TO LIAISE WITH THE CITY DEPARTMENTS, UM, OTHER AGENCIES NON-PROFITS AND COMPANIES WHO ARE PROVIDING THOSE SERVICES TO GIVE THEM TIMELY FEEDBACK ABOUT HOW THOSE ARE WORKING FOR HACA RESIDENTS.

SO IN THAT WAY, UM, THIS PROGRAM, UH, THAT DIGITAL AMBASSADORS MOBILITY AMBASSADOR ENERGY AMBASSADOR PROGRAM IS REALLY A CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND PARTICIPATORY INNOVATION PROGRAM.

AND THAT'S REALLY THE CENTER OF, OF, OF OUR WORK.

UM, BUT IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA, AS YOU ALL KNOW, UM, FROM, FROM HERE AT BOOKER T WASHINGTON, WHICH IS AROUND ROSEWOOD AND AIRPORT GOING DOWNTOWN, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF SOCIAL SERVICE PROVIDERS HAVE HAD TO THEY'RE BEING PRICED OUT OF THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS.

AND SO LOOKING AT BOOKER T WASHINGTON, WE CAN CONSIDER WHAT ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES TO LEVERAGE DIGITAL ACCESS RESOURCES THAT WE MIGHT HAVE, UM, TO HELP THIS COMMUNITY.

UH, WITHOUT IT BEING FREE, THE NEST THERMOSTAT, YOU KNOW, ONCE WE HAD THE PIECES IN PLACE, WE WERE ABLE TO CALL NEST, HADN'T BEEN ACQUIRED BY GOOGLE YET AND, AND FUNDRAISE, UM, A COUPLE HUNDRED NEST THERMOSTATS.

UM, AND SO IN THIS PICTURE, AGAIN, YOU SEE JEREMY AT THE FOREFRONT WHO WAS AN AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE INTERN.

YOU SEE A COUPLE OF OUR STAFF, ONE IN SUSTAINABILITY AND A MAINTENANCE STAFF PERSON.

AND, UM, ULTIMATELY THE NEST THERMOSTAT IDEA WAS REALLY GREAT BECAUSE WE LEARNED THAT, HEY, A CAREGIVER IS CARING FOR A RESIDENT.

THEY DON'T HAVE TO DRIVE ALL THE WAY TO TURN THE TEMPERATURE UP OR DOWN.

YOU KNOW, SOME OF THOSE THERMOSTATS ARE REALLY DIFFICULT TO MANIPULATE.

THEY ARE ABLE TO USE THEIR SMART PHONES TO HELP SOMEONE DO IT, AND RESIDENTS WERE AS WELL.
