[Mayor Steve Adler State of the City Address 2022 (Spanish)]
ARE NOW TO THE GAP DOWNSTAIRS.JUST TELL ME WHERE TO WALK OUT.
[00:11:10]
CAN[00:11:10]
YOU GUYS HEAR ME? OKAY.AND I AM SO PLEASED TO WELCOME YOU TO MAYOR ADLER'S LAST STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS.
I HAVE HAD THE HONOR OF SERVING AS CHIEF OF STAFF TO THE MOST PROGRESSIVE MAYOR IN THE STATE OF TEXAS AND THE HARDEST WORKING MAYOR IN AMERICA FOR THE LAST SEVEN AND A HALF YEARS.
I SEE A LOT OF OUR PRESENT AND FORMER TEAM ADLER STAFF HERE AND ON BEHALF OF THESE REMARKABLE HUMAN BEINGS AND THE MAYOR HIMSELF.
WE'RE SO GLAD TO HAVE YOU HERE TONIGHT.
YOU KNOW, PEOPLE SOMETIMES ASK ME HOW I SURVIVE FOR SEVEN AND A HALF YEARS, THE HARDEST WORKING IN AMERICA PART.
AND I WOULD SAY THERE'S ALWAYS BEEN SOMETHING FAMILIAR ABOUT HIM.
YOU KNOW, WE'RE BOTH TRAINED AS LAWYERS.
WE ACTUALLY CLERKED AT THE SAME LAW FIRM, EVEN UNDER THE SAME PARTNER, BUT ALSO EVEN THOUGH MAYOR ADLER IS JEWISH, HE OPERATES ON INDIAN STANDARD TIME.
IN FACT, I WAS SO SURE HE'D BE 15 MINUTES LATE RIGHT NOW WE HAVE PREPARED A 15 MINUTE VIDEO FOR YOU AS A THANK YOU TO HIM FOR HIS TENURE.
UM, YOU KNOW, EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM KNOWS HOW MUCH STEVE ADLER LOVES AUSTIN AND MAYOR.
WE LOVE YOU BACK YOU THE VIDEO YEAH.
AUSTIN IS LIKE NO PLACE ON EARTH.
IT'S THIS MAGICAL PLACE WHERE CREATIVE, BRIGHT, CARING PEOPLE WILL LEAD WITH THEIR VALUES.
EVERYTHING THAT WE LOOKED AT IN THE OFFICE HAD A LENS OF IS THIS INCLUSIVE, UM, WILL IT BRING AUSTINITES TOGETHER? WE'VE BEEN BLESSED THAT AUSTIN'S ALWAYS BEEN A WELCOMING CITY OVER THE LAST EIGHT YEARS.
AUSTIN HAS BECOME THE THIRD LARGEST PER CAPITA CITY OF LGBT COMMUNITY.
IT JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU THAT WE'RE DOING WHAT'S RIGHT BY THE LGBT COMMUNITY.
PREVIOUS MAYOR HELPED SOME, BUT NOT TO THE EXTENT THAT MAY ADD THE DEAD.
AND WHAT MAY ATLAS DID IS BROUGHT ALL THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER AND, UM, BRING US ALL OF US TO THE TABLE AND START TO WORK TOGETHER TO ACCOMPLISH THE CITY GOAL THAT THE CITY COULD BE.
THE MAYOR NEEDS TO BE THE CHIEF DEFENDER OF OUR VALUES, THE CHIEF DEFENDER OF OUR CITY, UH, FROM THE CYNICAL AND RELENTLESS ATTACKS BY OTHER LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT BY, UH, THE MOST, UH, AGAINST CYNICAL POLITICS THAT SEEK TO TEAR DOWN CITIES.
THIS COUNCIL, AND THIS MAYOR HAVE BEEN UNAPOLOGETIC ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE PRIORITIZING MENTAL HEALTH OVER INCARCERATION, THAT WE'RE FOCUSED ON HOUSING.
OUR STATE HAS BANNED ACCESS TO ABORTION.
WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO OVERTURN THAT BAN.
AND IN THE MEANTIME, FOR VITAL CANCER SCREENINGS, BIRTH CONTROL, HIV TESTS, TRUSTED SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE IS MORE ESSENTIAL THAN EVER.
AND THANKS TO OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH MAYOR ADLER AND THE AUSTIN CITY COUNCIL, WE'RE HERE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF AUSTINITES, I'D REALLY ADMIRED ABOUT HIS LEADERSHIP IS THAT IT'S BEEN CENTERED AROUND HOW DO WE MAKE AUSTIN A PLACE FOR EVERYONE, PEOPLE WHO HAVE HISTORICALLY
[00:15:01]
BUILT AND MADE THE CITY WHAT IT IS AND PEOPLE WHO ARE COMING INTO THE CITY TO TAKE US INTO OUR FUTURE OR THE LAST EIGHT YEARS IN THE CITY OF BOSTON, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TRULY WORK ON AFFORDABILITY IN OUR COMMUNITY.AND THIS HAS TAKEN A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS IN WHICH WE'VE TACKLED IT FROM HOUSING DISPERSION TO ENSURING THAT WE HAVE HOUSING IN EVERY PART OF OUR COMMUNITY TO BUILDING AFFORDABLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERYONE WITHIN AUSTIN.
SO REALLY MAKING SURE THAT THOSE FROM FOLKS EXPERIENCING UNSHELTERED HOMELESSNESS, TO THOSE WHO ARE FIRST TIME HOME BUYERS HAVE THE ABILITY TO GO OUT AND ACCESS AFFORDABLE OPPORTUNITIES.
THERE HAVE BEEN PAINFUL MOMENTS IN THE LAST EIGHT YEARS WHERE WE HAVE BEEN DIVIDED AS A COMMUNITY, BUT THE EFFORTS OF THE MAYOR HAVE BROUGHT US TOGETHER.
WE HAVE A STRUCTURE THAT LOOKS AT ALL OF OUR NEIGHBORS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS YOUTH, THE ELDERLY INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCING CHRONIC HOMELESSNESS, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, AND HOW THAT FACTORS INTO HOMELESSNESS AND PROVIDES THE FRAMEWORK FOR US DEVELOPING NOT JUST HOUSING CAPACITY, BUT THE CAPACITY TO SUPPORT AND ENABLE FOLKS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR HOUSING.
THE MAYOR GATHERED PEOPLE LIKE ME FROM THE BILL STATE COMMUNITY, PEOPLE FROM THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMMUNITY.
UH, WE WERE PUT INTO HIS CONFERENCE ROOM FOR OVER A PERIOD OF SIX MONTHS WITH THE IDEA OF COMING UP WITH A PRIVATE EQUITY SOLUTION TO THIS MODERATE INCOME, UH, AFFORDABLE PROBLEM THAT WE HAVE HERE IN AUSTIN.
AND OUT OF THAT EFFORT, UH, GREW THE AUSTIN HOUSING CONSERVANCY FUND.
AND, YOU KNOW, AGAIN, THE FUND LAUNCHED IN, IN, IN 2018, UH, WE BOUGHT OUR FIRST PROPERTIES THAT AT THAT POINT AND NOW HAVE, UH, REALLY KICKED UP OUR GROWTH.
UH, IN THE PAST YEAR, WE'VE INCREASED THE SIZE OF THE FUND, UH, BY 150% OVER THE LAST EIGHT YEARS.
UH, OUR COMMUNITY HAS FUNDED IN THE FORM OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING BONDS AND LEVERAGE THAT, UH, FOR OTHER SOURCES OF FUNDING AND CREATED OVER 800 PERMANENT SUPPORTIVE HOUSING UNITS AND OVER 4,000 AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNITS UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF MARY ADLER, WE'RE LOOKING TO A BOND PROPOSITION FOR $350 MILLION.
