[Proclamation – Ageism Awareness Day – To be presented by Council Member Fuentes]
MORNING EVERYONE.I REPRESENT DISTRICT TWO ON AUSTIN CITY COUNCIL.
WHEN WE THINK OF DISCRIMINATION AND JUSTICE, AGEISM MIGHT NOT COME TO MIND RIGHT AWAY, BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT AGEISM IS ONE OF THE MOST WIDESPREAD AND SOCIALLY ACCEPTED FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION.
THAT'S WHY TODAY I'M HERE WITH OUR COMMISSIONERS OF, OF AGING ON AGING AS WELL AS CITY STAFF TO HIGHLIGHT THIS FORM OF PREJUDICE.
IT AFFECTS OUR COMMUNITIES AND HOW WE CAN COMBAT AND HOW WE CAN COMBAT IT TO CREATE A MORE HEALTHY AND MORE JUST SOCIETY.
AGEISM CAN COME IN MANY FORMS, WHETHER IT'S CULTURAL, INTERNALIZED, IMPLICIT, OR BENEVOLENT, BUT REGARDLESS OF ITS KIND, ANY FORM OF AGEISM CAN RESULT IN A LOWER LIFE EXPECTANCY, HIGHER RATES OF MENTAL HEALTH CRISES, FINANCIAL EXPECTATION, AND MORE.
SO IT'S UP TO US COMMUNITY MEMBERS, LEADERS, AND ADVOCATES TO FOSTER AND CREATE A COMMUNITY THAT WORKS FOR ALL OF US REGARDLESS OF AGE.
[00:25:01]

AND WHEREAS OCTOBER 7TH SERVES AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE CITY OF AUSTIN TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF AGEISM AND TO PROMOTE INCLUSIVITY IN AGE-FRIENDLY POLICIES.
AND WHEREAS BY DESIGNATING OCTOBER 7TH AS AGEISM AWARENESS DAY, THE CITY OF AUSTIN AIMS TO EDUCATE RESIDENTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CHALLENGING AGE-RELATED STEREOTYPES, PROMOTE INTER INTERGENERATIONAL DIALOGUE AND CREATE AN AGE-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT FOR EVERYONE.
AND WHEREAS ALL RESIDENTS ARE URGED TO JOIN IN THE OBSERVANCE AND WORK TOWARDS BUILDING A SOCIETY THAT VALUES AND EMPOWERS PEOPLE OF ALL AGES, CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERYONE CAN THRIVE AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY.

IT CONTINUES THE CITY'S SUPPORT OF AUSTIN'S AGE FRIENDLY ACTION PLAN AND AUSTIN'S DESIGNATION AS AN AGE FRIENDLY CITY.
AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, AUSTIN IS, HAS ONE OF THE LARGEST GROWING POPULATIONS OF OLDER ADULTS, WHICH IS WHY THIS IS SO IMPORTANT TO GET THIS OUT THERE AND GET THIS IN PEOPLE'S MINDS.
WE ARE HAVING A CELEBRATION AT WATERLOO GREENWAY THIS SATURDAY MORNING, AND THEN THIS SATURDAY AFTERNOON, OCTOBER 7TH, WE'RE DOING A REVEAL OF A MURAL, MURAL OF OLDER ADULT FACES AT THE AGE OF CENTRAL TEXAS LOCATION.
WE'LL DO A QUICK LITTLE PHOTO HERE.
