[00:00:03] SO, IS EVERYONE READY? [New APD Chief Lisa Davis Meets the Media ] ALRIGHT, WELL WHY DON'T WE GO AHEAD AND GET STARTED. DOOR CHIEF, YOU WANNA COME ON? YOU STAND THERE? YEAH. YEAH. OKAY. WELL, YOU'RE GONNA BE HERE LONGER IN THE MORNING THAN, OH, IS THAT RIGHT? OKAY. GOTCHA. GOTCHA. THAT'S THE ROLE. SO, ALRIGHT. IS THERE ANY, I THINK THIS IS FOR Q AND A OR ANYTHING THAT ANYBODY MAY WANT TO ASK ABOUT TODAY'S EVENTS. I WAS HERE FOR THE CAKE, THE CAKE. OH, I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE CAKE IS AT A BREAKFAST TACO. DO YOU ACTUALLY LIKE BRISKET? ALRIGHT, I GUESS WE'RE DONE HERE. JUST START OFF, PROCEDURALLY, HOW DOES EVERYTHING GO FROM HERE? SO TIMELINE AND WHAT, AND SO WE ARE STILL WORKING THROUGH SPECIFICS ON START DATES, UH, BUT IT WILL BE, UH, EARLY, UH, SEPTEMBER, UH, AFTER LABOR DAY FOR SURE. AND SO WE'VE GOTTA WORK THROUGH SOME DETAILS ON HER TRANSITION. OBVIOUSLY IT'S A BIG MOVE, UH, TO THE CITY OF AUSTIN, AND SO WE'RE STILL TRYING TO FINALIZE THAT. TODAY WAS, I THINK, UH, THE IMPORTANT DAY. UH, AND THAT IS AFTER MY, UH, DECISION AND RECOMMENDATION TO COUNCIL. THEY CONFIRMED, UH, CHIEF DAVIS' APPOINTMENT. AND SO FROM HERE, I THINK WE JUST MOVED FORWARD, UH, TO GET HER ACCLIMATED, MOVED HERE AND INTRODUCED HER TO, UH, THE MEN AND WOMEN. SHE WILL LEAD IN THE DEPARTMENT. DID YOU WARN HER ABOUT AUGUST MONTHS? I DID NOT. I DID NOT WANT TO RUIN IT. . I WANTED TO WAIT TILL AFTER THE CONFIRMATION, SO I APPRECIATE YOU BRINGING THAT UP. UM, I, I'LL GO MORE THAN 30 CANDIDATES. YOU HAD TO PICK FROM OUT OF THE 30, YOU CHOSE THIS INDIVIDUAL. WHAT WAS THE ONE THING THAT YOU SAID, I GOT THIS RIGHT. YOU KNOW, THERE WERE PLENTY OF THINGS AND OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T GET TO SPEND THE AMOUNT OF TIME, UH, WITH THE OTHER APPLICANTS. WE NARROWED THAT TO TWO, UH, WHICH I BELIEVE WE HAD TWO GREAT CANDIDATES. AND, AND I WILL TELL YOU THROUGH, UH, MY DAY AND, AND SPECIFIC CONVERSATIONS WITH CHIEF DAVIS. I, I THINK ONE THING BROKE THROUGH TO ME. ONE WAS HER, UH, EXPERIENCE, PARTICULARLY AROUND, UH, USING DATA-DRIVEN APPROACHES TO HOW, UH, SHE WORKS WITH THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS, UH, DEALING WITH SPECIFIC CRIME ELEMENTS, UH, IN CERTAIN COMMUNITIES, UH, AS WELL AS HER FOCUS ON COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. AND MY FEEDBACK THAT I RECEIVED, UH, ONE FROM HER, UH, THE CITY MANAGER IN CINCINNATI, AS WELL AS JUST WHAT I PICKED UP FROM HER INTERACTIONS WITH THE PUBLIC, THAT THE ENGAGEMENT ASPECTS THAT SHE TALKED ABOUT, WHICH WERE CRITICAL TO HER AND WHAT SHE HAD DEMONSTRATED IN CINCINNATI, REALLY, UH, RANG THROUGH TO ME AND UNDERSTANDING WHERE WE ARE AS A DEPARTMENT, AS A CITY, AS WELL AS, UH, HOW I VALUE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, FELT LIKE SHE WAS THE RIGHT CHOICE, UH, BASED ON THOSE REASONS. AND SO I'M JUST EXCITED, AGAIN, THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE HIRED HER. UH, THE COUNCIL CONFIRMED HER AND THAT SHE STILL WANTS TO COME HERE AND LEAD THIS DEPARTMENT. SO I'M EXCITED ABOUT IT. YOU DID TAKE A FEW EXTRA DAYS, YOU KNOW, TRYING TO MAKE THAT DECISION, WHICH I THINK, YOU KNOW, KIND OF MAYBE RAISED A FEW LITTLE CONCERNS OUT IN THE COMMUNITY ABOUT, OH, WHAT'S GOING ON? WHY IS HE DOING THIS? CAN YOU EXPLAIN THAT AND WHAT YOU WERE DOING DURING THAT TIME? SURE. AND SO THANK YOU FOR RAISING THAT. I'VE HEARD THAT, AND AS FOLK MAY NOT BE AWARE, UH, THE PROCESS, UH, TOOK PLACE ON A MONDAY AND A TUESDAY. UH, AS IT RELATES TO, UH, OUR ACTUAL INTERACTIONS WITH THE CANDIDATES. UH, THERE WERE, UH, UNFORTUNATELY A COUPLE OF COUNCIL MEMBERS WHO HAD AN OPPORTUNITY THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS TO INTERVIEW AND HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH THE CANDIDATES. BUT THERE WERE TWO AT LEAST THAT DID NOT GET THAT OPPORTUNITY. SO THAT HAPPENED MUCH LATER, UH, AFTER THE CANDIDATES HAD GONE, UH, BACK TO THEIR RESPECTIVE, UH, STATES. AND SO WE HAD TO ARRANGE FOR SOME BRIEF CONVERSATIONS. I WANTED TO GIVE COUNSEL, SINCE THEY WERE CONFIRMING THE CANDIDATE, I WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE COUNCIL MEMBERS WHO DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO INTERACT HAD THAT OPPORTUNITY. AND THAT DIDN'T OCCUR UNTIL LATE, UH, IN THE WEEK. UH, WHICH IN FACT, I DID NOT WANT TO POST, UH, ANY TYPES OF MEETING NOTIFICATIONS AND I HADN'T MADE MY DECISION YET. 'CAUSE I HADN'T FINISHED THE FULL LOOP OF FEEDBACK. UH, AND SO I DEFERRED IT SINCE THERE WAS NO IMMINENT NATURE IN WHY WE HAD TO HAVE A MEETING ON THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY. AND SO, JUST TO BE MORE REFLECTIVE, HAVE THE CONVERSATIONS WITH MY CITY COUNCIL, PARTICULARLY THOSE WHO WERE LATE, UH, IN THEIR OPPORTUNITY TO MEET, UH, WITH CHIEF DAVIS AND, UH, CHIEF NORMAN. UH, AND SO THAT IS PRIMARILY THE REASON WHY I DELAYED THE DECISION. CHIEF RUDY KOSKI WITH FOX SEVEN AUSTIN NEWS. WELCOME TO AUSTIN. THANK YOU. UM, CHANGING OUT A HEAD COACH FOR ANY TEAM THAT'S DIFFICULT. TRANSITION IS ALL, YOU KNOW, THERE'S A HONEYMOON PERIOD. UM, WHAT DO YOU HOPE AFTER THAT HONEYMOON PERIOD GETS OVER, WHAT DO YOU, WHAT DO YOU, WHAT'S THE MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY? WHAT'S THE MESSAGE TO THE RANK AND FILE? [00:05:01] UM, I THINK I'VE SAID THAT BEFORE. IT'S TRULY ABOUT, UM, LEARNING AND LISTENING. THAT'S WHAT I'M DOING RIGHT NOW. RIGHT? AND SO THOSE FIRST A HUNDRED DAYS ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. AND I'LL BE HAVING MORE, UM, ON HOW THAT'S GONNA LOOK, UM, AT SOME POINT. BUT THAT'S A BIG DEAL IS THAT FIRST A HUNDRED DAYS, AND IT'S ABOUT LISTENING, UM, LOOKING AT THE CHALLENGES FACING THE DEPARTMENT AND THEN WHERE WE GO FROM THERE. SO THAT'S, THAT'S THE FOCUS AND THAT'S WHAT THE OFFICERS AND THE COMMUNITY CHIEF, THERE'S BEEN A, I FEEL LIKE THERE'S TWO MAIN PILLARS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT A LOT. MM-HMM. . IT'S THE MORALE, THE TRUST, THE RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION, AND THEN THE DATA DRIVEN APPROACH TO REALLY COMBATING A LOT OF OUR BIG SAFETY ISSUES HERE. GOING TO ONE OF THE FIRST POINTS LAST NIGHT AT PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION MEETING, NO, OBVIOUSLY VERY EARLY FOR YOU, STILL, BUT THERE'S A LOT OF TALK ABOUT CONCERNS ABOUT WORKERS' COMP AND HOW THAT WAS IMPACTING MORALE. I WANTED TO SEE IF THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS ON YOUR RADAR AT ALL. WORKERS' COMP, YES. COMPENSATION. NO, I'M, I DON'T KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT THAT AT THIS POINT. POINT. SORRY. I SHOULD HAVE WATCHED THAT IN MEETING, SIR. ME TOO. YEAH. THIS, THIS COMMUNITY IS VERY SENSITIVE TO OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTINGS. MM-HMM. , WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY IN REGARDS TO YOUR OFFICERS IN THAT DECISION OF SHOOT, DON'T SHOOT. YEAH, THESE ARE TOUGH QUESTIONS. I, AND, AND THAT'S A TOUGH THING, RIGHT? AND WE JUST HAD A SHOOTING RECENTLY IN CINCINNATI, A POLICE INVOLVED, UM, SHOOTING. AND ONE IS, UM, GETTING OUT AND BEING AS TRANSPARENT AS YOU CAN. AND, UM, YOU KNOW, TO ME IT'S WITHIN 24, 48 HOURS OR 12 HOURS EVEN, THE SOONER YOU CAN GET OUT WITH, WITH SOME SORT OF STATEMENT, THE BETTER. UM, BUT IT'S ABOUT OFFICER WELLNESS AND TAKING CARE OF THE OFFICER, TAKE TALKING TO THE FAMILY, UM, OF THE INVOLVED PERSON. UM, SO THERE'S A LOT THAT PLAYS INTO THAT AND I'M VERY SENSITIVE TO IT. AND THE ENGAGEMENT, THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. WHAT'S YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF THE ENGAGEMENT, THAT MOMENT OF THE OFFICER AND THE, AND THE INDIVIDUAL AND THAT DECISION TO, TO, TO FIRE THE, THE SERVICE, UH, WEAPON? YEAH, THE DECISION TO, TO SHOOT AND TAKE A LIFE. I MEAN, THAT'S SOMETHING THAT NO OFFICER TAKES FOR GRANTED. THAT'S FOR, THAT'S FOR CERTAIN. AND I THINK IT'S ABOUT LOOKING AT WHAT THE TRAINING IS, UM, AND WHERE WE GO WITH THE TRAINING. I MEAN, UH, AND, UH, UH, TO TAKE, TO TAKE AN, A LIFE IS A BIG DEAL. AND, UH, THERE'S NOT AN OFFICER THAT COMES TO WORK THINKING THAT THAT'S SOMETHING THAT THEY'RE GONNA BE INVOLVED IN. BUT HOW DO WE GET TO A POINT WHERE WE DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH THOSE THINGS? RIGHT. AND THAT'S THROUGH YOUR TRAINING AND, UM, THE SKILLS THAT YOU DEVELOP FROM, FROM THE ACADEMY. AND NOW THIS IS OFFICIALLY LIKE YOUR JOB, YOU KNOW, WHAT ARE YOUR, WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN PRIORITIES? WHAT DO YOU THINK IS NEXT FOR THIS DEPARTMENT GOING FORWARD? YEAH, SO AGAIN, THE MAIN PRIORITY IS TO, TO MEET WITH THE OFFICERS. UM, I'M MEETING TOMORROW AT THE COMMAND STAFF MEETING TO KIND OF, UH, GET TO KNOW THEM AND IT'S ABOUT KNOWING WHO THE OFFICERS ARE AND THE COMMAND STAFF, WHAT THEIR STRENGTHS ARE. AND I LOOK FORWARD TO LEARNING ALL THAT. UM, CHIEF HENDERSON IS, IS GONNA HELP WALK ME THROUGH ALL THAT. AND I LOOK FORWARD TO HER EXPERTISE AND HER OPINION ON THESE THINGS. UM, BUT THAT'S WHERE IT STARTS IS JUST LISTENING. YOU MENTIONED CHIEF ANDERSON. CAN WE BRING HER UP FOR ME? YEAH. IF, IF, IF SHE WOULD LIKE, YEAH, THIS YOUR LAST PRESS CONFERENCE, YOU MIGHT AS WELL FOLKS. SEE, YOU JUST JINXED ME. YOU JUST SAID, THIS IS MY LAST PRESS CONFERENCE. I BELIEVE YOU, I BELIEVE YOU. JUST, WHAT'S WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE TO THIS, THIS NEW CHIEF, THIS, THIS NEW MEMBER OF THE FAMILY? WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE TO HER? WELL, I, SHE'S WELL EXPERIENCED AND WELL, AND WELL SEASONED, UM, AT WHAT SHE DOES, A TRUE COMMUNITY ADVOCATE AND LEADER, I WOULD SAY YOU, AUSTIN IS A UNIQUE, VIBRANT, UM, ECLECTIC CITY. AND TAKING THAT TIME TO INVEST IN GETTING TO KNOW OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS, ALL OF OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS, OUR UNIQUE DIVERSITY THAT WE WE HAVE HERE, BUT ALSO THAT ENGAGEMENT WITH OUR, WITH OUR OFFICERS. WE ARE DEALING WITH SOME UNIQUE CHALLENGES HERE WHEN IT COMES TO OUR STAFFING, THE GROWTH OF THE CITY IN AND OF IT IN AND OF ITSELF. AND SO HAVING THAT ENGAGEMENT AND UNDERSTANDING AND LOOKING FROM THOSE THAT HAVE, OF COURSE LIVED IN AUSTIN, BUT THOSE THAT ACTUALLY WORK AT THE DEPARTMENT, BOTH ARE SWORN AND CIVILIAN STAFF LOOKING TO THEM TO LEARN AS TO WHAT IT IS THAT WE, WE NEED, UH, TO MOVE THE DEPARTMENT FORWARD AND ALSO KEEP OUR COMMUNITY SAFE. ONE OF THE BIG, I GUESS, EFFORTS THAT THEY'RE TRYING TO DO HERE IS GET MORE WOMEN ON THE POLICE FORCE. I KNOW YOU HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN STARTING TO DO THAT. WHAT DO YOU SEE? DO YOU SEE THAT CONTINUING NOW? AND DO YOU HAVE KIND OF A PLAN OF ATTACK? YEAH, SO I MEAN, ROBIN KNOWS THIS. I MEAN, UM, AUSTIN, UM, PD IS COMMITTED TO THE 30 BY 30 INITIATIVE, WHICH IS GETTING, UM, THE DEPARTMENT TO 30% WOMEN BY THE YEAR 2030. AND THERE'S A LOT OF WORK TO DO. UM, I THINK AUSTIN CURRENTLY SITS BELOW 12% WHEN IT COMES TO, TO FEMALE REPRESE, UH, REPRESENTATION. SO AGAIN, THERE'S WORK TO DO, BUT YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE WAY YOU'RE RECRUITING AND HOW ARE WE RECRUITING TO WOMEN, UM, HOW WE'RE RECRUITING TO WOMEN AND WHEN IT'S, UH, ABOUT HOW THEIR LIFE WOULD LOOK AS A, AS A POLICE OFFICER AND THE SERVICE AND WHAT THAT MEANS. AND I THINK, I MEAN, ROBIN AND I CAME THERE, THERE'S, THERE'S MANY WOMEN HERE THAT HAVE, UH, ANSWERED THE CALLING TO BE A POLICE OFFICER. UM, AND IT IS A NOBLE PROFESSION AND IT IS, UM, ONE THAT I THINK WOMEN ARE SO SUITED FOR. AND YOU CAN LOOK AT THE DATA ON WHAT MAKES IT GREAT TO, TO BE A WOMAN IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. AND I THINK THAT'S WHAT WE HAVE TO DO WHEN WE'RE LOOKING AT RECRUITING, IS PUSHING THOSE YOU THE CHANCE TO MEET WITH THE COMMUNITY. [00:10:01] YOU HAD YOUR INTERVIEWS WITH COUNCIL, NOT SURE WHAT OTHER LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS, NEIGHBORHOOD GROUPS LIKE THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD FROM, BUT WHAT, CAN YOU KIND OF SUM UP WHAT YOU'VE HEARD FROM THE COMMUNITY AND COMMUNITY LEADERS ON WHAT THEY WANNA SEE FROM YOU? I HAVEN'T HEARD A LOT ABOUT THAT THEY'RE EXCITED TO MEET AND, AND SO AM I. SO I THINK IT'S ABOUT JUST GETTING OUT THERE AND GETTING ON THE GROUND AND MEETING AND TALKING TO PEOPLE THAT, THAT'S MY GOAL FROM DAY ONE. WHAT DO THESE NEXT FEW LIGHT FEW WEEKS LOOK LIKE FOR YOU BEFORE YOU OFFICIALLY TAKE ON THIS ROLE? YEAH, I THINK I'M GONNA BE WORKING ON MY CERTIFICATION. UM, THAT'S, THAT'S ONE THING THAT, THAT'S A TOP PRIORITY BECAUSE I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO COME IN HERE, UM, AS SOON AS I POSSIBLY CAN TO BE IN UNIFORM, TO PUT THAT UNIFORM ON. I THINK THAT MEANS A GREAT DEAL TO THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE, THE DEPARTMENT AND IT MEANS A GREAT DEAL TO ME. CHIEF THE, UH, DEPARTMENT HAS HAD KIND OF A ROCKY RELATIONSHIP WITH CITY HALL, CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS THE PAST THREE OR FOUR YEARS, AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I'VE HEARD FROM COUNCIL MEMBERS IS THE HOPE THAT THE NEXT CHIEF CAN KIND OF HELP NORMALIZE THOSE RELATIONSHIPS. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOU? HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE THAT? YEAH, IT'S SO INTERESTING BECAUSE, UM, WHEN I WAS HERE A FEW WEEKS AGO, UM, BOTH, BOTH WANT TO HAVE GREAT RELATIONSHIPS, RIGHT? THE COUNCIL WANTS GOOD RELATIONSHIPS AND SO DOES THE, UM, ASSOCIATION. SO IF THE DESIRE IS THERE, IT'S JUST ABOUT BRINGING THEM TOGETHER. AND SO THAT'S, IT'S DOABLE. I THINK IT'S JUST ABOUT LOOKING AT, UM, YOU KNOW, WHERE WE ARE AND JUST COMING TOGETHER. SO AGAIN, THEY'RE BOTH, UM, DESIRING THAT AND WHEN BOTH OF THEM WANT THAT, WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN. . ALRIGHT. YOU HAD LIGHTER QUESTION. YOU SAID YOU REALLY WANTED TO MOVE TO AUSTIN, YOU LIKED AUSTIN. MM-HMM. , I REMEMBER IN THE FIRST PRESS CONFERENCE YOU HAD YEP. WHAT, WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LIKE SO MUCH ABOUT THE CITY AND MADE THIS SUCH A DRAW FOR YOU? YEAH. TO TRY. WELL LISTEN, ANY, ANY TOWN THAT VALUES MUSIC, FOOD, AND ART AND THEN HAS BATS LIKE, I MEAN, SERIOUSLY, IT'S JUST AMAZING. IT IS AN AMAZING CITY. UM, WHEN I STAYED HERE, I STAYED AT THE DRISCOLL WAS THE FIRST HOTEL I EVER STAYED, UH, STAYED IN HERE. UM, JUST AMAZING. AND THEN TO GET OUT AND WALK AND WALK DOWN SIXTH STREET AND THE OPEN BARS AND THE MUSIC AND IT WAS JUST AMAZING. AND THE FEELING, THE, THE PEOPLE ARE LAID BACK, THEY'RE WARM, THEY'RE FRIENDLY, IT'S JUST, IT REALLY IS AN AMAZING PLACE AND I JUST FELT A CONNECTION INSTANTLY TO IT. SO ARE YOU A REDS FAN OR AN ASTROS FAN OR A RANGERS FAN? I'M A REDS FAN. I'M SORRY, I'M A REDS FAN. ARE YOUR ALLEGIANCE GONNA HAVE TO CHANGE? NO, IT DOES NOT. AND I'M, BUT I'M GLAD ABOUT NO FOOTBALL TEAMS HERE, SO I CAN STILL BE, WELL, YOU KNOW, MAJOR LIKE, WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN, LIKE, THERE'S NOT WITHIN THE CITY. NEXT FOLLOW UP QUESTION. LIKE, I CAN BE A BINGOS FAN, RIGHT? THIS IS GOING SIDEWAYS. GOING SIDEWAYS. SPORTS QUESTIONS GETS YOU EVERY TIME. THEY DO, DON'T THEY? I DO DO ABOUT BARBECUE. OH MY GOSH, THE BARBECUE HAS BEEN AMAZING. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? IT, IT'S, I DIDN'T WANNA SWALLOW IT. THAT'S HOW GOOD IT WAS. I DIDN'T WANT, IT WAS FANTASTIC. SO YES. ALRIGHT. YOU REDEEMED YOURSELF? YEP, I DID. YEP. THANK YOU GUYS. YOU SPOKE ABOUT DS REGARDS TO HAVING THE CALL TO OFFICER AS A MM-HMM. PERSON WOULD DO. WHAT MAKES YOU, UH, GAVE YOU THE CALL TO BECOME CHIEF HERE? UM, TO BE, TO COME TO AUSTIN TO BECOME THE CHIEF? I THINK ANYONE THAT TAKES THESE ROLES, AND ROBIN COULD PROBABLY SAY THIS AS WELL. I, I, YOU GET TO A CERTAIN POINT IN YOUR CAREER AND YOU'VE DONE THESE THINGS, RIGHT? AND IT'S KIND OF THAT NATURAL STEP. I FEEL LIKE I HAVE SOME GOOD IDEAS AND I FEEL LIKE, UM, YOU KNOW, I'M STILL PASSIONATE ABOUT IT AND YOU HAVE TO HAVE THAT PASSION, UM, TO CONTINUE ON. AND SO I FEEL, YOU KNOW, BETWEEN THE IDEAS AND JUST THE, THE, THE, UM, DESIRE TO GET OUT AND DO THE WORK, UM, IT'S JUST A NATURAL FIT AND I'M NOT, YOU KNOW, I'M NOT READY TO, TO HANG IT UP. HAVE YOU MET WITH, UH, OR TALKED WITH, UH, THE COUNTY OR DISTRICT ATTORNEY? I BELIEVE THEY WERE PART OF THE PROCESS THAT WE, WE DID HERE. OKAY. SO YOU HAVE TALKED WITH THEM? YES. THE REASON I ASK IS BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DEPARTMENT AND THESE OFFICES, IT'S BEEN FUNCTIONAL, BUT, BUT KIND OF ICY. YEAH. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU'D LIKE TO DO TO KIND OF CHANGE THAT DYNAMIC? WELL, I THINK IT'S, IT'S, IT COMES BACK TO, YOU KNOW, WE CAN BE IN A ROOM AND, AND THEY WERE PART OF THE PROCESS AND ASK QUESTIONS, BUT, UM, NOTHING, NOTHING BEATS JUST SITTING DOWN ONE-ON-ONE AND TALKING. UM, THEY HAVE A JOB TO DO AND SO DO WE. AND I THINK, UM, AGAIN, BEING AT THE TABLE AND HAVING THOSE CONVERSATIONS ON WHERE YOU'RE COMING FROM, YOU'RE NOT ALWAYS GONNA AGREE, BUT AT LEAST THEY'LL KNOW WHERE I'M COMING FROM. UM, AND I THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT. WHAT WERE THE RELATIONS LIKE IN CINCINNATI WITH, UM, YOU KNOW, YOUR COUNTY AND DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE AND YOUR YEAH, SO WE CALL IT JUST A PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE, RIGHT? UM, VERY STRONG. I MEAN, WE DON'T, AND IT IS DIFFERENT. I MEAN, IT'S DIFFERENT, YOU KNOW, IN CINCINNATI, UM, THEY MAKE THE DECISION WHETHER THEY, UM, TAKE, UH, AN INDICTMENT, YOU KNOW, REFERENCE AN OFFICER, THEY TAKE THAT INDICTMENT TO, UM, A GRAND JURY WHERE IT'S DIFFERENT HERE. SO, SO THAT IS SOMETHING ABSOLUTELY THAT, THAT I'M GONNA HAVE TO, UM, YOU KNOW, WE'LL TALK ABOUT AND KIND OF WORK AROUND, NOT WORK AROUND, BUT IT, IT'S SOMETHING WE'LL DEFINITELY HAVE TO DISCUSS. BUT IT IS DIFFERENT AND YOU HAVE TO HAVE THOSE STRONG RELATIONSHIP AND IT'S NOT ALWAYS, IT'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT AGREEING. IT JUST ISN'T. I'M NOT LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS SOMEONE THAT AGREES WITH THEM ALL THE TIME. THAT'S JUST NOT HOW YOU GROW AND THAT'S NOT HOW YOU GET BETTER AS AN ORGANIZATION. BUT, UM, YOU HAVE TO HAVE RELATIONSHIPS. YEAH. CAN YOU DESCRIBE AN ENCOUNTER YOU HAD AS A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER THAT KIND OF CRYSTALLIZED YOUR APPROACH TO LAW ENFORCEMENT THAT HAS CONTINUED TO THIS DAY? UM, I THINK ABOUT ALL THE DIFFERENT APPROACHES, AND IT GOES BACK TO WHAT, WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT LAW ENFORCEMENT? [00:15:01] IT IS, UM, THESE PEOPLE REMEMBER YOU, YOU KNOW, I LOVE THE QUOTE WHEN IT'S, UH, I THINK IT'S MAYA ANGELOU WHO SAYS, YOU'LL FORGET. UM, YOU MAY FORGET WHAT SOMEONE SAID TO YOU OR WHAT THEY DID TO YOU, BUT YOU WILL NEVER FORGET THE WAY SOMEONE MADE YOU FEEL. AND THAT'S WHAT POLICING IS. YOU KNOW, THE, THE PERSON THAT YOU HELPED OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, THEY REMEMBER YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. YOU FORGET IT BECAUSE IT'S JUST PART OF YOUR DAY. AND IT'S, AND IT'S THAT, THAT'S WHAT'S SO MAGICAL. AND I USE THE WORD MAGICAL, BUT THAT'S WHAT POLICING IS. IT'S ABOUT THOSE LITTLE THINGS, THOSE LITTLE MOMENTS. SO MY CAREER HAS BEEN MADE UP OF THOUSANDS OF THOSE LITTLE MOMENTS. ALRIGHT. ALRIGHT. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. APPRECIATE. * This transcript was created by voice-to-text technology.
