[Proclamation – Austin-Tonkawa Friendship Day – To be presented by Mayor Kirk Watson]
IT'S THURSDAY AND WE ARE, UH, GETTING READY TO HAVE OUR CITY COUNCIL MEETING.BUT BEFORE THAT CITY COUNCIL MEETING, WE'RE GOING TO, UM, HAVE SOME PROCLAMATIONS WHERE WE HONOR PEOPLE AND CALL ATTENTION TO REALLY GOOD THINGS IN AUSTIN, TEXAS.
AND OF COURSE, I WANNA START WITH, UH, JUST SAYING THAT ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS THAT, UH, I GET TO DO IN MY ROLE AS MAYOR, AND I'M, I'M PLEASED TODAY TO BE JOINED BY OUR MAYOR PRO TEM LESLIE POOLE AND COUNCIL MEMBER CHITO VELA.
BUT, BUT, UH, ONE OF THE NEAT THINGS I GET TO DO IN THIS ROLE IS TO HONOR, UH, CITIZENS WHO HAVE PERFORMED ACTS THAT, THAT ARE SPECIAL TO OUR CITY.
AND THIS IS AN EXTRA SPECIAL ONE BECAUSE IT'S RARE THAT YOU GET A CHANCE TO BESTOW AND HONOR TO THE PEOPLE WHO LOVED AND CARED FOR OUR CITY EVEN BEFORE WE WERE A CITY, EVEN BEFORE THE CITY WAS FOUNDED.
BUT TODAY, UH, WE ARE JOINED BY THE TONAH TRIBE OF OKLAHOMA, AND THEY'VE ACCEPTED THE INVITATION I GAVE TO CHIEF RUSSELL, UH, EARLIER THIS YEAR TO TRAVEL DOWN FROM TONAH, OKLAHOMA TO AUSTIN, TEXAS TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR PRIOR PRESENCE HERE IN AUSTIN.
TODAY IS THE TAWA TRIBE'S FIRST VISIT, OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE CITY OF AUSTIN IN OVER 150 YEARS.
NOT ONLY DO I WANT TO HONOR THEM FOR THEIR PAST PRESENCE IN THE AUSTIN AREA, I WANT TO HUMBLY ASK THEM IF THEY MIGHT BE POSSIBLE TO REIGNITE A 100 AND 80-YEAR-OLD FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN, BETWEEN THE AWA TRIBE AND THE CITY OF AUSTIN.
ABOUT A YEAR AGO, I GUESS IT WAS A DEAR FRIEND OF MINE AND SOMEONE WHO HAS, UH, BEEN A FRIEND OF MINE FOR MANY, MANY YEARS, MARTHA RA.
UH, I'VE PARTNERED HER WITH HER FOR MANY YEARS, UH, IN DIFFERENT WAYS TO SUPPORT THE LATINO COMMUNITY HERE IN AUSTIN.
SHE CALLED AND ASKED TO MEET WITH ME, AND SHE TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING I NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT THE INDIGENOUS TONKO OF PEOPLE, A TRUE STORY OF THEIR PRESENCE IN AUSTIN THAT WAS NOT, UH, WIDELY KNOWN.
UH, YOU, FRANKLY, YOU WOULD SU EXPECT IT TO BE MORE WIDELY KNOWN.
I LEARNED THAT WHEN OUR CITY WAS NEWLY FOUNDED, WHEN IT WAS VULNERABLE IN 1842 DURING THE ARCHIVE WARS, THAT THE MAIN PART OF THE TAWA TRIBE CAME AND LIVED WITHIN OUR CITY LIMITS.
THEY LIVED ON A CAMPSITE BY WHAT WE NOW REFER TO AS REPUBLIC SQUARE, JUST A COUPLE OF BLOCKS FROM RIGHT WHERE WE'RE STANDING RIGHT NOW, IN SO DOING.
BUT WHEN THE TONKO TRIBE CAME IN, THEY IMMEDIATELY DOUBLED THE SIZE OF THE THEN CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
AND FOR THE NEXT 18 MONTHS, THE PEOPLE OF AUSTIN RECEIVED PROTECTION FROM THE TONAH TRIBE'S PRESENCE HERE WITH US.
AND WE IN TURN GAVE THE TONAH TRIBE THE RIGHT TO TRADE IN THIS TOWN.
THE TON LIVED COOPERATIVELY WITH THE PEOPLE OF AUSTIN DURING THE TIME OF GREAT NEED, AND THEY SHOWED BOTH AN INCREDIBLE ACT OF SERVICE AND HEROISM, UH, IN ADDITION.
SO I'M HOPING THAT TODAY THAT PRIOR FRIENDSHIP CAN BE REIGNITED AND WE WILL GO FORWARD, UH, AND MAKE MORE HISTORY.
SO WITH THAT, IT'S TIME TO MAKE A PROCLAMATION, BE IT KNOWN THAT WHEREAS THE TIT KNOWN TODAY AS THE SOVEREIGN NATION OF THE KOWA TRIBE CONSIDER TEXAS THEIR ANCESTRAL HOMELAND WITH AN ORIGIN STORY CENTERED ON RED MOUNTAIN, FORMERLY SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN IN MILAM COUNTY, ALONG THE EL CAMINO DE LOS TEJAS NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL.
AND WHEREAS THE TONAH CAMPED NEAR TODAY'S REPUBLIC SQUARE ALONG SHOAL CREEK, PROVIDING MUTUAL PROTECTION SUPPORT AND TRADE OF GOODS DURING THE PERIOD AFTER 1842.
AND WHEREAS THE TONAH WERE ALWAYS AT PEACE AND PROVIDED VALUABLE ASSISTANCE TO EARLY SETTLERS OF TRAVIS COUNTY AT SUCH PLACES AS WEBER AND THE JORDAN BACHMAN FARM, NOW KNOWN AS PIONEER FARMS. AND WHEREAS THE AWA WERE ALLIES OF TEXAS SERVING AS SCOUTS AND PARTICIPANTS IN MANY ENGAGEMENTS DURING THAT PERIOD.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, KIRK WATSON, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS, ALONG WITH TODAY, UH, OUR MAYOR, PRO TIM, AND COUNCIL MEMBER OF VELA DO HEREBY PROCLAIM SEPTEMBER 12TH, 2024, AS TO AUSTIN KOWA FRIENDSHIP DAY IN AUSTIN, TEXAS.
AND I'M VERY PLEASED TO ASK CHIEF RUSSELL, UH, IF HE'LL ACCEPT THIS PROCLAMATION AND SAY A FEW WORDS WITH US.
[00:05:01]
SECRETARY OF TREASURE.YOU KNOW, IT'S, UH, IT'S, IT'S A PLEASURE TO COME BACK HOME AND, YOU KNOW, I'M, I, I KNOW OUR ANCESTORS WILL BE VERY PLEASED.
UH, THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.
WE'RE GONNA, WE'RE GONNA REINTRODUCE OURSELF TO TEXAS IN SO FAR SO GOOD.
THE RELATIONSHIPS WE'VE ALREADY BEGUN TO MAKE HAVE BEEN OUTSTANDING.
I CAN'T, I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH HOW GRATEFUL WE ARE FOR THE AWARD.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY SOMETHING?
UM, WE CAME OVER HERE A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO AND IT FELT LIKE IT WAS ALREADY HOME.
IT GUYS HAVE BLESSED US AND WELCOMED US WITH OPEN HARM, UH, WITH OPEN ARMS. AND EVERY TIME THAT WE COME BACK HERE AND VISIT, IT JUST GETS BETTER AND BETTER.
LIKE WE'VE ALWAYS BEEN FAMILY.
SO WE APPRECIATE THIS AND WE THANK YOU VERY MUCH FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS, AND I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT COMES IN THE FUTURE.
SO WHAT WE'LL DO IS WE'LL TAKE A PICTURE NOW, BUT I WANNA INVITE MARTHA CORTA TO COME UP AND, AND, UH, SYLVIA OROZCO WITH METRO CARTE MUSEUM, IF YOU WANNA COME UP AS WELL.
WHY DON'T WE COME UP AND TAKE A PICTURE TOGETHER? DOES THAT WORK? CHIEF, I'M GONNA GIVE YOU ONE CHALLENGE.
WHERE, HOW DO YOU WANT US WILL THIS IN FRONT, IN FRONT OF THE PODIUM.
YOU WANNA STEP IN PODIUM FRONT? YEAH, LET'S COME IN FRONT EVERYBODY.
