I'M ANNE GRAHAM, A MEMBER OF THE FRIENDS OF THE ELIZABETH NAY MUSEUM, AND A RESIDENT AND FAN OF THE MUSEUM HERE FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS.
THE MUSEUM HAS A SMALL BUT MIGHTY STAFF AND MEMBERS OF OUR ALL VOLUNTEER GROUP HELP PROMOTE AND RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE MUSEUM, RAISE FUNDS, SPARK NEW PROGRAMMING, HELP WEED THE ZEROSCAPE LANDSCAPE IF THAT'S WHAT IT NEEDS.
AND EVEN THIS SUMMER'S TENDED VEGETABLES FOR ONE OF THE FOOD PANTRIES THAT WE GREW VEGETABLES FOR.
AT THE NAY, WE AIM TO KEEP THE LEGACY OF ELIZABETH NAY ALIVE AND WELL, AND ALWAYS MOVING FORWARD.
WE'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE MUSEUM AND THRILLED THAT MID TO LATE YEAR, NEXT YEAR, 2026, ALL EYES WILL BE ON THE NAME MUSEUM AS IT UNVEILS THE COMPLETION OF AN EXTENSIVE RENOVATION AND RESTORATION PLAN.
IF YOU PASS BY TODAY, YOU'LL SEE PLYWOOD OVER THE WINDOWS AND DOORS AND PROTECTIVE FENCING AROUND THE CONSTRUCTION SITE.
WHAT THE MUSEUM IS GETTING TODAY IS RESTORATION OF DOORS AND WINDOWS, A NEW HVAC SYSTEM, NEW SECURITY SYSTEM, NEW LIGHTING SYSTEM, AND AN ACCESSIBLE BRIDGE THAT PROVIDES ACCESS ACROSS WALLER CREEK, BETWEEN THE MUSEUM AND 45TH STREET.
FUNDING FOR ALL OF THESE SIGNIFICANT EFFORTS HAVE LONG BEEN DEDICATED FROM THE 2012 COA BOND FUNDING, PARKLAND DEDICATION FUND, NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION, PRIVATE PHILANTHROPY, REALLY SORT OF A TRUE PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP.
THAT'S ONE OF THE ROLES THAT THE FRIENDS PLAY.
HOWEVER, THERE ISN'T A LINE ITEM IN THE BUDGET FOR WHY WE ARE HERE TODAY, WHICH IS TO HELP IDENTIFY SOURCES OF FUNDING AND TO ASK FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF OUR EFFORTS TO BUILD AN A DA ACCESSIBLE

SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN MISSING FOR OVER A HUNDRED YEARS.
BUILT IN 1892, THE MUSEUM WAS THE STUDIO AND HOME OF ELIZABETH NAY, WHO IN HER DAY WAS WORLD RENOWNED AS A SCULPTOR.
FIRST IN EUROPE AND THEN IN THE UNITED STATES.
THE MUSEUM IS OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE CITY OF AUSTIN, AND IS THE LARGEST REPOSITORY OF NAYS WORKS ANYWHERE.
NAYS SCULPTURES ARE OWNED BY MUSEUMS AROUND THE WORLD, INCLUDING THE SMITHSONIAN AND THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS.
IF YOU WALKED INTO THE STATE CAPITOL, YOU JUST PASSED HER LIFE SIZE.
SAM HOUSTON AND STEVEN F. AUSTIN, BOTH OF WHO ARE IN THE STATE CAPITOL.

THE MUSEUM IS ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES AND ALSO HAS STATE AND LOCAL HISTORIC DESIGNATION.
IN ADDITION TO BEING A SCULPTOR, SHE WAS ALSO AN INTELLECTUAL WHO INVITED GUESTS FROM ALL AROUND TO ENGAGE IN DISCUSSIONS AND CONVERSATION ALONG WITH HER HUSBAND OR PARTNER MONTGOMERY, WHO WAS A PHILOSOPHER, EDUCATOR WRITER.
UM, ELIZABETH'S WORK AND INTELLECT HELPED LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR AUSTIN AS AN INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL, AND FORMOSA THE CA THE CASTLE AS AN ICONIC HOME BASE.
BUT THERE IS ONE CRITICAL PIECE MISSING FROM THIS LANDSCAPE, AND THAT IS THE A DA ACCESSIBLE BATHROOM.
OUR VOLUNTEER DOCENTS LET US KNOW THAT THE NEXT STEP MUST BE TO BUILD AN A DA ACCESSIBLE BATHROOM.
THEY OFTEN SAY THAT THE FIRST THING VISITORS SAY WHEN THEY WALK INTO THE BUILDING IS, DO YOU HAVE A BATHROOM? THE ELIZABETH NAME MUSEUM HAS ONE TOILET IN THE BASEMENT WITH NO SAFE EGRESS UP OR DOWN.
IT'S ACCESSED BY A NARROW WOODEN STAIRCASE AND DOES NOT MEET ANY BATHROOM CODE.
THE CLOSEST BATHROOMS ARE IN SHEE PARK, TWO TOILETS IN THE HISTORIC DOG TROT CABIN, A BLOCK AND A HALF AWAY.
THEY'RE OFTEN FREQUENTLY LOCKED AND NOT ONLY CLEAN, SADLY, WE KNOW THAT THE CITY WOULD NOT AND COULD NOT BUILD RETROFIT PUBLICLY OWNED BATHROOMS. TODAY WITHOUT A DA ACCESSIBLE BATHROOMS. WE HAVE RECORDS SUCH AS BATHROOMS WERE ON PARTS PLANNING DOCUMENTS TO CONSTRUCT WELL OVER 10 YEARS.
I ACTUALLY HAVE A PICTURE RIGHT HERE OF THE BATHROOM, WHICH IS, I DON'T HAVE, I DIDN'T THINK ABOUT PUTTING, I DUNNO IF YOU COULD SEE THERE PUTTING IT UP.
IT'S NOT, IT'S NOT VERY PRACTICAL, LET'S PUT IT THAT WAY.
CURRENTLY, ANYONE, PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, SCHOOL GROUPS, INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES WITH BABIES AND STROLLERS HAVE NO SAFE WAY TO MAKE THE ONE BATHROOM IN THE BASEMENT ACCESSIBLE.
AS A CONSEQUENCE, THE FRIENDS OF THE NA MUSEUM SEEK TO PRIORITIZE THE CONSTRUCTION OF A DA ACCESSIBLE BATHROOMS, INCLUDING HOPING TO HAVE A LETTER OF SUPPORT FROM THE MAYOR'S COMMITTEE FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES TO SUPPORT AND PRIORITIZE THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN A DA ACCESSIBLE BATHROOM FOR THIS INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED MUSEUM, THE ELIZABETH NAME MUSEUM.
IN ADDITION, WE SEEK YOUR HELP IN IDENTIFYING AND SECURING ANY FUNDING FROM THE CITY OF AUSTIN'S ANNUAL BUDGET PROCESS.
WE KNOW HOW TIGHT THAT IS AND THE 2026 CITY OF AUSTIN BOND ELECTION.
WE'VE BEEN PRESENTING AT THE BOND HEARINGS AS WELL, AND HOPE TO BE PRESENTING AT THEIR WORKING GROUP SHORTLY.
UM, AND ANY OTHER AVAILABLE SOURCES FOR BOTH PRIVATE AND PUBLIC FUNDING? AND WOULD, THIS INCLUDES PRIVATE PHILANTHROPY, FOUNDATIONS, INDIVIDUALS, ET CETERA.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU DO LETTERS OF SUPPORT, BUT I'D LOVE TO SUP LOVE TO FOLLOW UP ON THAT PART OF THE CONVERSATION.

IT WOULD BE A FREESTANDING BUILDING BUILT ON THE FOOTPRINT OF WHAT IS RECORDED AS QUOTE.
THE STABLES USED TO BE HORSE STABLES.
THERE ACTUALLY VERY NEAR ANOTHER PLATFORM WHERE THEY PUT UP TENTS AND SPENT THEIR SUMMER NIGHTS IN THE TENT IN THE TENTS RATHER THAN IN THE BUILDING, WHICH WAS TOO HOT, WOULD BY BY CITY CODE.
IT WOULD HAVE TO HAVE TWO TOILETS.
IT COULD BE GEN, NON-GENDER SPECIFIC SINKS.
UM, AND THEN THERE WOULD BE A SMALL STORAGE UNIT FOR THE GARDENING AND NON-OFFICE STORAGE MATERIALS.
